Exhaust manifold ring gasket

In checking out an exhaust leak on my 1967 442 (400 cu.in. V8). I found out that the "friend" who helped me install the exhaust system did not install the flange ring gasket on the cast iron (stock) exhaust manifold to header pipe. I found the box with all the left over stuff from rebuild kits, etc. and found the two flange rings. My question is which way do they install ? One side is a "ring" of metal -- the other is a tapered composite material.

I've attached a few photos of the drivers side manifold showing the outlet.

Thanks in advance-- Craig

looking at the picture I doubt it will fit any other way but with what looks like the brass rim FACING UP and matched to the coned exit on the exhaust manifold casting and the exhaust pipe connecting to the lower, darker cone side, that appears to be asbestos or ceramic brake pad material.
keep in mind olds engines had several different size exhaust systems and theres some chance that's not the intended matching gasket ring
