Fabrication of a 200-4R Transmission Mount

Hey guys,
Rick and I are having a great time, I took a break and Rick is prepping the mount for final assembly in the chassis. This has been a fun project for both of us I think. We have had a few snags along the way, but I halfway expected that. We had to make a few alterations, which I also halfway expected also, to the plan and construction. When we are done I am sure Rick will post pics of the finished product. As you all know Rick likes shiny things and no sharp edges. So, we spent most of the first day making the raw parts I made all shiny and free of sharp edges and did some planning.
We did a lot of the measurements and early welding yesterday, and got to the point of just welding. That was when we had a snag I wasn't expecting, ran out of argon. I borrowed the tig rig from a friend and apparently his flow-meter leaks. We have my abilities with regular stick to fall back on and we'll get it done later this afternoon.

About to do final assembly, just a few pics.
Rick's turn to grind.

Rick is still grinding.

This was my little welding department.

This is one of the oldie but goodie benchgrinders.

We just finished and Rick will post some pics of the finished product.

Usually I have several funny digs for Bob, but lucky for him I only have
one, and then it's only PRAISE!!!

He did 95% of the work while I played gofer, but it was my honor!. Now
I'm sure this project would have gotten completed somehow by myself, but it
never would have been done with the same quality and perfection that I need
to be able to sleep at night.

The rest is history......and I'm going to bed, good night!!!!

But before I go....

One great big thanks to Bob (busterrm)!!!!

I just got home and was happy our project turned out the way it did. Really we both did the work, Rick with his keen sense of methods and accuracy and myself with the welding. To be honest we kinda complimented each other, things that one lacked in skills the other filled in, and the job got done in grand fashion. I was more than satisfied with the end result as was Rick(Indycars).
As I stated before, we had a few snags that hindered us a bit, but being resourceful as we both are we overcame and adapted very well. The first one was mine, we went to the welding supply store and I left the defuser for my Tig rig on the counter and had to go back and get it. Then, I was under the impression that all the cuts were square, not true, the short pieces that held the uprights that bolt to the transmission mount itself have to be cut at the angle that the tranny sits versus the frame. That is where most of our time was spent getting it assembled in reverse order of what I thought. Then we get ready for the weld up process and in the middle I run out of argon, so we used 3/32 7018 to finish it. The end product as Rick just showed you in his pics looks great. We had a blast when not working, drinking import beer, watching John Wayne movies, and saturday night we went to Toby Kieth's restaurant and had some great food. All in all, we worked, relaxed, enjoyed a western, went to Bricktown and had good food, just an all around great Easter Weekend.

Pardon me as I drool on your handiwork - I promise to wipe everything off with a cheese cloth + windex.

I actually look forward to seeing it painted and the stainless parts all polished and shiney.

Oh yeah, I almost forgot all about something! Hey Guys, how does Rick look with one of the dorky looking welding caps that all welders wear. I had three that I kept in my tool box at work, so when I brought my two welding hoods I brought them with me. I gave him the choice between the one I ended up wearing during the project and the funny green color one he chose. The one I wore I kinda liked cuz it has motorcycles on it, and I might wear it to ride my bike sometime. They are all my size and Rick doesn't have large a head, all things in Texas are big, including my head. I must have unusual large imagination, hence Bob the big headed texan. Rick could just about pull it down over his ears.

Thats because I have very dense intelligence, its suspended in sawdust and water inside my head to protect its important contents.

Nice comeback :D

If you don't have one these digital angle finder, get one!

Bob and I used it over and over checking brackets before he would weld them. The
one I bought seem to have good reviews on Amazon, but when I tried to clean the
metal shavings from the magnets with modeling clay it pulled one magnet out and I
still have not found it. Another magnet was partially out and tapped it with a piece
of metal and it cracked. It was about $25

It should be most helpful when making cuts and you need to be very accurate. You
can Zero it on the table saw table and move it to blade and measure the difference.

Next time I will be more gentle and maybe put some epoxy in the recess to make
sure it's permanent.

So I'm returning it to Amazon. One of their options it to use the credit to upgrade, so
I went with the Wixey 365. It has a display that can be adjusted so you can see it. I think
this will be very helpful so I don't have to stand on my head to see the display, sometimes
it can be in a peculiar place and angle for reading.

any more progress on assembling
the drive train in the t-bucket yet?
viewtopic.php?f=69&t=3814&p=33989&

To answer Grumpy's question.....while waiting on parts for the 200-4R trans
I worked on the transmission mount that Bob fabricated for me and then
welded. I got the driveshaft loop drilled with 3/8" holes in 3/8" stainless,
now that did NOT go real fast!

This is what I started with before beginning to polish.

This is what I have now, about 33% finished polishing for this year. Besides
many people tell me it's under the car, no one is going to see it....Bull Shit!!!

taking the time to polish up and properly fit and finish parts few people will see, and parts they may not see, is the mark of a professional and, yes it can be taken to extremes.

but it reminds me of an old saying
"most people are HONEST when some ones looking , but an HONEST MANS still HONEST when NO ONE IS LOOKING"

Rick is a bit of a perfectionist.
Some would say Krazy like the rest of us here on Grumpy's forum posting
on a regular basis.
Looking Good Rick.

I don't think I can stand the pressure of living up to that one......so I need to lighten
things up abit. I couldn't decide between the two, so I will let the masses vote.

OR

What say you ???

Although what you said Brian is TRUE ..... I just knew when I was reading that
you were going to say "Krazy like a FOX", then came the let down and depression.

But I REALLY do appreciate all the nice comments gentlemen!!! It's what makes
this forum special!!!
