got to shake my head at time's , why is it so difficult to isolate & test

Mike (one of my neighbors) ask me to stop by, he swapped carbs and now the cars got a bad miss...
after fighting the carb tune for over an hour he walks next door when he saw me walk out to the mail box,to get my opinion,
he checked the car for vacuum leaks fuel pressure, adjusted the floats etc.
Results, no real change. I walk over to the car , ask him to start it,
I ask a few questions like
when you swapped the carb, did you change the fuel filter?
, adjust the timing?
, check vacuum hoses?,
replace the spark plugs?,
use a new carb gasket?
what was wrong with the old carb?
was the new carb running correctly on the engine you took it off/
how long has that replacement, carb sat un-used ,between uses?
inside of 5 minute I had it running fine,
its not that I know a good deal more than Mike,
its simply that I, don,t assume things,
and I check & verify and don,t guess...
I approach the issue and assume everythings wrong until I prove its OK
mike simply made a very minor screw-up and put two ignition wires back ,
on the distributor cap in the wrong location.
we all make mistakes, even I do!
EXPERIENCE, is simply a word for the decades of learning process involving remembering successful moves and countless mistakes

but I simply have learned , long ago,
if you have any problem isolate and test to find its source!
too go back to the basics and never assume a damn thing!
Mike spent well over an hour adjusting the carb,
never once thinking that the ignition wires he temporarily removed,
and replaced during the carb swap, could be an issue!

Sounds familiar to me lol. But yes trouble shooting any problem has steps that if followed will fix the problem. It is all about eliminating variables. Basic logic comes into play here. IF A then or if B then.

Not everyone is a mechanic. Some are shade tree want to be mechanics that don't have the smarts for or the time to put in due diligence. Not all can figure out what makes things work---properly. Not to say bad things about the neighbors or anyone in particular. CAFF---compression - air - fuel - fire. And why would you pull the plug wires off the distributor? Maybe a Ford?
