Grumpy I would like to pick your brain on a 383 motor build for a 81 vette 355 gear auto with a future upgrade to a 200ry or 700ry . I have a good block GM bored out 040 over with comp roller retro fit lifters that I gotwith the motor the thumpor cam I got with it will be used for a door stop I like the Ohio crankshaft rotating kit 383 street rodder kit 5140 forged crank forged 6" I beam rods srp forged flat top pistons it's intervally balanced I like the msd ignition 8551 pro billit dist 8223 Blaster III coil 6 AL box with rev limiter and msd wires it will have at least 1 3/4 ceramic headers and I like the AFR 195 cc street heads w 655cc chambers I still need to find a cam my present thumper is # 12 602-8 and I think it's a bad cam for my motor this will be a street hp runner not a racer I would like to know if you have time to check this out and give me your opinion on what to keep and what to change I also need an intake carb and oil pan I'm on a budjet but that that was blown out of the water years ago This agean a street motor with some highway miles to carlisle and someof the other meets 3-6 hours away I'm also thinking of upgrating to an aluninum radiator , engine , and trans oil cooler and whats your opinion on electric trans . Any advice you're willing to share or opinions or suggestions will be appriciated
thanks in advance

ok, what is your goal for the engine IE will it be mostly for cruising?
does it need to pass emission testing?
do you know what pistons youll use so I can figure the compression ratio?
do you have a stock or higher stall speed converter?

http://www.compcams.com/Cam_Specs/CamDe ... =1260&sb=0

heres the cam you listed,
its designed MOSTLY to produce a LOPEY rolling IDLE, not for power
(I don,t know why comp cams bothers producing the THUMPER LINE OF CAMS unless theres far more guys who are happy with cars that sound radical but run like crap, than I would think there are)
I can provide several known combos with better cams but ID like to know more about how you want to use the engine, Im assuming you intend on using pump octane gas and youll install a 3000rpm stall converter so youve got a decent chance to maximize the AFR 195cc heads and 383 displacement with that 3.55:1 rear gear and overdrive transmission, so low and mid rpm torque will be important

Grumpy sorry I posted twice my daughter is my secturary. I and my writing and spelling are rough anyway all things are questions nothing is desided on other than the block and and a few items useable they are new unplanned and ran like a pos and I thought I got a good deal on. My goals are just guesses and dreams I'm looking to hit the target not nescessary the bullseye but the bullseye would be hell of a bonous the car will be a cruiser mostly mountain trips 2 hrs ,my cabin 3 hrs, carslile3 hrs. I'd be supprised of I get 5000 miles a year and I don't even get that many on the bike. My HP goal is 450 give or take but I really want torque and realiability and also have Pr brakes no A.C. THe block is 0040 over with retrofit lifters are hyrdrlic . I'll need a carb , intake , and IGN and heads.Everything after that this is not etchecd in the stone and what ever cam I use hold the door open like thumper as a doorstop . I've seen ones lunati crane and others that have 2500-6500 rpm range and this is 3500-8500 just a guess # advice wanted I'm also working the shop to makea collector that will go from the3" header pipe and adapt to all 4 of my 1 3/4 sidepipe tubes so the thing isn't going from 3" to 1 3/4 I have a set from 1.5 full roller rockers a a new timing gears I need a 6? QT oil pan heads romting assy ign untake and carb anyelse you can suggest I'm not trying to be cheap but I want to save as much as possibible and not compromise quality you have post and rated brodix heads more than AFR and what about alum rad and stock fan radiator or are electric fans the only way to go and break in the oil . what do you suggest? thanks I guess I've asked enough questions already.

Ive found BRODIX heads to be a great value, now theres not a darn thing wrong with AFR or TRICKFLOW or a couple other heads, and we all must work in our budgets, I use mostly TRICKFLOW and BRODIX heads, but its mostly because of cost issues as all three brands can produce excellent power if matched to the correct components but, on a cost vs value basis Id stick with those three choices, in a 195cc-210cc port size on a 383, obviously youll want to re-use as many parts that you currently have, and thats fine but try HARD to stay with the basic design and air flow rates, once you start substituting components the results tend to change radically

ID suggest you start by reading all the sub linked info in this thread as it will provide you with a TON of info and related engine build ups

ID read thru these several times

Ive generally found that

the CROWER 00471 cam

or if you want a slightly more street friendly engine, heres the crane cam I use in my personal 383 sbc
http://www.cranecams.com/index.php?show ... vl=2&prt=5
but remember I use nitrous

rl930 hydraulic roller lifters
http://www.pbm-erson.com/store.php?catId=420

edelbrock air gap intake
http://www.summitracing.com/parts/EDL-7501/

a decent 750cfm holly carb
http://www.summitracing.com/parts/HLY-65-3310/

comp 1.6:1 roller rockers
http://www.summitracing.com/parts/CCA-1318-16/

tall valve covers
http://www.summitracing.com/parts/TFS-31511802S/

BRODIX 200ccIK heads
http://www.summitracing.com/parts/BRO-1021001/

a decent oil pan

and a 383 sbc short block with 10.5:1 compression, ratio, matched to a 3.73:1- or -4.11:1 rear gear , a good manual; transmission or an over drive auto with a 3000rpm stall converter, and a decent low restriction exhaust, goes a long way to reach your goal
