Harmonic Balancer/ Damper Selection

Hey guys. I am building a 496 BBC. It is internally balanced. I do not know which direction to go in the damper department. I want it to be SFI approved, and 8 inches in diameter. I have looked at FluiDampr 800101, and the summit and pioneer products dampers. I want something that will lead to long bearing life, as this engine will be in a daily driver. I don’t know the difference when it comes to harmonic balancers/ dampers, so let me know what y’all think.

I think ATI Super Dampners one of the Best for Racing.
Also the TCI Rattler that is not very popular here but has been used on Jegs Engine Master Challange Engines & have won .

Fluid Dampner is OK. I have seen them fail leak out Silicone fluid. Guys dirt track racing a rock hit it and dented and outer case compromised and leaked.
Seen them fail high RPM Drag Race.

Have to look at your drive accessory pulley layout. Is it stock or High dollar Billet serpentine belt layout & what will work & fit with Zero headaches and fitment issues.

I am running stock pulleys and belts with guaranteed no fitment issues (engine is going in a C10). I just want whatever will be best for my engine. The rev limiter will be set at 6500 rpm. The engine is just a warm street combination aimed more at daily driver performance than drag racing. My first choice is the fluidampr, as most diesels have them from the factory for heavy duty applications. It is just a little too expensive. I like the pioneer products one too but I don’t know if it will be as good at absorbing engine vibrations.

Rubber Elostomer Harmonic balancers work just fine idle to 6500 Rpms. Can push to 7k + if SFI. I have done it drag racing Pontiac V8.
What kills them is a sudden engine misfire. Kabamn the Balancer fails blows apart.

So ATI design Bullet proof to such issues.
TCI Rattler.
Fluid Dampner also but I have seen them fail like I said. .real bad RAP with drag racers especially guys using Nitrous oxide.
Kaboom they fail Fluid Dampner.

All out Race dampners always have pulley alignment issues with stock accessory drives. Work it out.

Rubber OEM Style SFI Not so much.

The misfire part makes sense. I will be using nitrous eventually :) I’ll look at the ATI and TCI rattler.
