one of the bathroom showers is leaking into the area behind the tile,
now I have asked for several contractor estimates and they all seem rather high
I was wondering whats involved that someone sees as so difficult or time consuming ETC.

any thoughts or previous experience would be helpful
now I watched the house being built and to me this certainly seems like something that could be done in a couple(3-4) days time
the showers about 40" wide x 60" deep, and tiled up to about 6 ft high

This pretty much sums it up..

Now if it is a shower only... you will need to install a vinyl shower mat down on the floor and up the walls before the cement board is installed.

I've had one guy who was highly recommended, by several people,
I know, come by to give me an estimate, he was or at least seemed to be,.. semi reasonable ,
but wanted an open ended per hour labor rate, as a wage, contract/ before starting work,
not a firm finished price, obviously this is not something that is conductive to having a known set , total cost.
either that or he wanted me to provide all the materials and pay $2000 up front,
for over 2 weeks he's been stalling and not willing to start, and playing phone tag,
on the project, even though he keeps saying he's going to start "tomorrow" at the hourly rate,
I finally, had enough of the B.S. and told him I was no longer willing to deal with him!
I'm certainly glad I had not given him a down payment, or sign any contract.

never do an open end contract. He should have given you a price to remove and install the new tile on cement board.
What I used to do when I owned my construction company was to give a solid price on removal and installation, with the contract broken down to show the material costs, labor costs and a detailed list of what is included to complete the job. . Their was a clause that if any other unforeseen damage was found under the the water damaged area( like rotted subfloor, or rotted joists) .. there would be a "change order" wrote up for the extra work signed by both parties before the damaged area found was addressed. This protected both Myself and the homeowner.

good advice! and yeah Im still looking for a reliable handyman/contractor with good recent references,
I have interviews set up.
