head gasket

hi grumpy, this might sound like a stupid question. but im installing some cylinder head gaskets from mr gasket. on a 350 chevy. its an oem style gasket,
it doesnt have any ssymbol or mark saying this is up , engine side, top ,, it doesnt say nothing at all,.. is there an orentation way to install them or is it just universal either up or down ? mr gasket prt # 7100 kit . thanks

when you have a question similar to this its always smart to call the manufacturer to verify proper part installation, for example in this case the head gasket question could be directed too....

There are gaskets made specifically for this swap. Use other gaskets at you're own risk- these are what you want (from a V/R press release, presumably prior to the Gen 6 engine release):

General Motors 7.4L Head Gasket
Issue:

General Motors (GM) 7.4L (454 CID) engines use two types of engine blocks: the Mark IV and Mark V. The Mark IV is found on 7.4L engines in model years from 1965 to 1990, and the Mark V is found on 7.4L engines in model years from 1991 and newer.

Often, installers will attempt to adapt a Mark IVcylinder head for a Mark V block. This conversion can be made if attention is paid to the coolant circulation. Mark IV and Mark V have different coolant flows and were originally designed for different head gaskets. If the conversion is not performed correctly, the engine will overheat, causing premature engine wear and damage.

Resolution:
Victor Reinz has designed two Nitroseal® head gaskets to specifically allow for this conversion. The installation requires Victor Reinz part number 4918 be installed on the right cylinder bank to maintain proper coolant circulation, and part number 4923 to be installed on the left cylinder bank for the correct coolant flow.

Application:
Victor Reinz part numbers 4918(right bank) and 4923 (left bank) are available for GM 7.4L (454 CID)
engines.

but I can save you the trouble in this particular application, those are generic head gaskets that are designed to be installed facing in either direction interchangeably. keep in mind the head gasket bore must be larger than the block bore diameter and in spite of printed directions suggestion installing the gaskets dry in most cases , I install all had gaskets sprayed with a good damp coat of copper coat on both surfaces and torqued in place while damp/tacky, after first carefully cleaning with acetone and drying surfaces on heads and block.

I would spray both sides, of both head gaskets, till they are damp with COPPER COAT SPRAY just prior to the instal though

when installing almost any head gasket, "but especially with a copper head gasket,s" be sure to put on two wet even coats on both sides of the head gasket and install and torque while the copper coat sprays still damp ,the spray fills in micro flaws in the machined surface
