New today, My name is Rich and I currently have 3 Corvettes. First one is a 1971 coupe, 4 spd. fully optioned, second one is a '72 coupe, auto and that's it and 3rd one is a 2006 Z06 which is unusual because the date of manufacture( Feb 05) predates the start of '06 production. It has several different parts not seen on other Zs.
I'm currently working on my 72 repairing the hard to do stuff and I plan to sell it soon as it's done (sub-10K).

But cars don't have chrome bumpers anymore.

Welcome to the forum Rich! So what do you call the "hard to do stuff"?

I define the hard stuff as the things that are under the car and requires skill and tools the average Joe can't do doesn't want to do (besides spending the money).
Last year I bought a 72 that was an actual real barn car. Sitting in hay and bales of hay ontop. It's amazing in that it does not have any rust except for the rear bumpers and exhaust. Nothing besides the points, wires, brakes where ever changed, it still had the original white wall F70 tires. The interior is nice, except for some small cracks on the arm rest and the seat foam is really compressed so the seats are not comfortable.
After I bought the car from the estate of an 80 yr old man that owned it since 1975, I desided I'm not into this car. It's white, I already have a white vette, it's an auto, I like sticks and it doesn't have a/c or tilt wheel - I cannot be happy with no A/c or tilt wheel and the car is not that significant to me to put that stuff on.
The paint is shot but the body is perfect and no hits or cracks. My thoughts to sell this car and get my money back is that I would fix the hard stuff that scares a lot of buyers away. I have a Mohawk lift at home and that makes most repairs much easier. I am making this a safe driver - Lars rebuilding the carb and distributor, Gary's guidence replacing leaky seals in the rear diff and bushings for the T/A's. Brakes/calipers replaced, new exhaust with Magnaflow mufflers (upgraded to 2.5 inches), rebuilt the original starter, replaced the fuel pump and rubber fuel line parts. New belts, hoses, battery, serviced the trans, flush radiator, replaced thermostat, wippers, some underhood detailing, rebuild the power steering control, and some other stuff. Everything works including the clock, the engine performs like new. I'm leaving the cosmetic stuff up to the new owner, that way what ever the car needs the owner will have instant gradification seeing the car transform faster then having to do repairs that are unseen. I probably wont be able to get more than $9500. since most people cannot see past a paint job and rear bumpers.
I'm open to suggestions, I find trying to sell a car is a huge PITA! I hate dealing with people with their buying mentality that never makes sence.

I'll post pictures when I get it off the lift- I will be posting the underside pictures as the repairs progress on.

Do you anticipate making some money on the work you put into
the Vette or do you just like doing the work?

Can't wait to see the photos you post during the repairs, should
prove to be interesting for us gearheads!

I don't mind telling the numbers, how would it hurt me? I paid $5,950 not running. I'll have between $2,500 and $3,000 in parts put into this project when I'm all done. I like doing the work - well . . . . most of the time.
I'm not doing this for the money. I have to sell and it's my theory that if I ask $6,500 without any work I'll most likely be beat-down because of this and that and this and that. So, what if I present this car for sale, put it up on the lift and get out the spot light and mirror and say -"examine what you want - I'll stand back and just answer questions" afterwords you can take it out by yourself and run it, there are some great roads here. Wouldn't you feel great about this all else considered?
When someone calls on the vette I want to make sure they are ok with seeing past the paint, no a/c and no tilt wheel. I'm not going to waste my time just for someone in the end saying "I really want an A/C car." for the price I'll be at you can paint, install a tilt wheel and A/C and still not be upside down investment wise.

First off, thanks for sharing the numbers, everyone reading this has got to
wonder what you paid for the barn find!

It looks like to me you're making the same money either way......just braking
even or there abouts. So in the end you must get some satisfaction from
doing the work and saving another Vette.

"Wouldn't you feel great about this all else considered? "

Most definitely I would as the buyer. I guess for the same reason that all
Vette owners give a wave as they cross paths driving down the road, they
also have integrity when selling their Vette's.

 Some have said I paid too much but I've seen worse for less - I see this area like this:
For "project" cars
On eBay the ready for the scrap pile C3s sell for the $3500 to $5500 range - low side don't expect a motor or interior - high side, not running, bodywork plainly visable interior is really rough. Needs everything.

On CL, C3s sell at (low) $2,500 to $6000 (I'll ask at what price sold). Low side: title problems, no drivetrain, no interior, 3 or more different colored panels or hit hard. On the high end: NOM, interior shot, not running.

-----------------------

C3s on eBay selling for $5500 to $6999. Sellers calling these barn-finds. May be running but not road-worthy. A list of things not working.

CL selling at $5500 to $7000. May be road worthy, sellers claim the 5th for any questions.

Above this level nothing makes sense when pricing Corvettes, sellers call everything "Rare" Beat cars with everything toasted but claiming only 43K original miles.

My favorite CL Corvette for sale ad: "Rare 1979 Corvette 141,000 Highway miles, some rust, engine replaced. I listed this ad for my father so I don't know very much about condition. Don't spam me or I'll kick your ass and tell everybody, No joy rides, must prove you have the funds to pay for this car. Call for pictures"
