I'm joining to ask a few questions in regards to an engine I bought last night. I was told it was a 67 or 68 400 big block. After doing some research today and I'm believing that it is not a 400, but instead a 1987 307. I'm just so confused.

Welcome Brian,
I'm a bit confused too. A 307 is a GM small block and its very obvious not a big block MOPAR. You mention a 400? Is that a MOPAR or a GM (small or big block?) 307's last year was 1973. The last year MOPAR had 440 in production cars and trucks was 1978.
Do you have any photos, any casting numbers? Any Id?

I had a mistyped the 440 it should have said 400. on the top front of the block behind water pump it say 6509gm5.0L G. and on passenger side of the block it has a 5L casted into the block above center freeze plug. The letter "G" on the front next to the oil pressure switch seems to mean 400 big block according to some things ive seen, but the rest I have found means it is a 1987 307

Can you send ANY picture? Don't need a close up or a great one, just send something.
They didn't make any 1987 307

I believe You Have an Oldsmobile V8 Engine.
1987 307.
They are not real high HP.
Factory Hydraulic roller cam engine.
It has decent fair Torque.
They pull Tall Rear Diff gears like 2.24 & 2.41 & 2.56 :1 effortless.
Real reliable.
Can run 300,000 + Miles with no rebuild.
Just a Timing chain replacement every 120,000 miles.

350 , 403, & 455 Oldsmobile V8 engines can still be found.
Buying price $50 -800 .
They have higher Street Torque output.
Nice Budget engines to use & rebuild.
Oldsmobile engines all have real strong factory forged connecting rods.
Cast crankshafts are Tough also.
Smog era engines run on 87 octane gasoline effortlessly .

I am working on.my 1965 Olds 425 V8 project into my 1963 Pontiac Grand Prix.
Factory Forged crankshaft engine.

I forgot about the Olds 307 made until 1990 in Cutlass. Those 307s had nothing in common with the Chevy 307, very small exhaust ports they made 140 hp to (if it was a Hurst Ed.) 180 hp. My oldest son had a 1984 Olds Hurst, rear main seal, valve stem guides and some fuel delivery problems all under 150,000 well cared for miles. We replaced the motor with the simplest - cheapest create engine 350 we could find and even then it was twice the performance of this 307 pos.
