Hello From Sd

Hi everyone. Thanks for this awesome site. Tons of great info here. More than my brain can handle for sure. I'll be posting to the forum soon seeking advice on a build.

glad to have you join up, why not post a few pictures and let us know what you have planed?

I would love to get some pics, but the project is in Northern MN under 2 feet of snow right now! Will be digging it out and moving it to SD in a couple months.

ok! at least tell us abit about what you might have planed and what previous experience and projects you have

ok here goes. I've always been a Gbody fan. Had a handful of Monte Carlos, but my baby was an 86 GN. Did some minor mods to all my cars but nothing major. Foolishly sold the GN when I moved up north and it sat in my garage for years.

Grew up on a farm in IA, always working on something. Liked (and still do) powersports so have done a fair amount of small engine work and mods. One of my sons shares this passion with me so its fun to work on projects together. Probably the most fun was taking a stock Yamaha Raptor 660 to ~60ish HP. That was a beast.

I'm rambling a bit, but another project was taking a 78 GMC k25 from carb to TBI. That was a disaster. Just couldn't get the tuning and electrical gremlins solved. Ended up bailing on that project. About that time picked up a 84K15 as a project. I have posted on build advice for that project. Another project that has potential is the 69F100 that my grandfather owned. Pretty rough now, but would like to cut to swb, crown vic front end/4-link rear and build a 351m/400 stroker for a street rod.

Welcome to the forum from Oklahoma !

Oh and couldn't post pics of my GN...must need to hit a post count first?
We don't have any restriction to keep you from posting pics other than a size limit. What happens
when you try to post a pic? What is the file size of your pic?

Lurking here to see recommendations for the 351M build. Have one in my grandson’s 1979 F250 that may need stroking.

JUST CURIOUS, with a salvage yard 460 ford being fairly cheap and easy to build ,or rebuild
why would you spend a good deal more to build a 351m,
especially in aa truck where massive torque is desirable,
I d bet you can get more hp per dollar starting with a 460

theres lots of places you can buy an already rebuilt 460 long block for under $2700
and a basic used 460 from a wrecked truck,
can generally be purchased for under 700 at a salvage yard

Well, I was thinking of keeping the original block in the truck. Of course, I could pull and save the 351 and do as you suggest. Does the 460 mount to same location?

A quick search indicates the swap should be straight forward with kit(s) available. Should be enough 460’s in this area to grab. Getting a rebuilt unit shipped here adds close to $1,500 for shipping and any core expense as shipping a core south makes no sense. Thanks for the suggestion.

FIND A LOCAL DONOR TRUCK THAT RUNS , OR HAS OBVIOUS ISSUES NOT RELATED TO THE ENGINE ( RUST ON BODY)OR HAS A BAD TRANSMISSION

your local pick & pull OR you pull it salvage yard, :D:)
yeah Alaska is limited IN THIS REGUARD

probably has a 460 ford for under $700
just look for a donor truck/car that was obviously in decent physical condition:D
(IF THE OWNER KEPT THE TRUCK IN DECENT CONDITION,
HE MOST LIKELY DID MAINTINANCE REGULARLY:D
PRIOR TO HAVING BEEN IN A MAJOR T-BONE OR REAR END IMPACT
Accident (LESS LIKELY THE ENGINES BEEN DAMAGED)
(THUS YOU KNOW IT WAS RUNNING BEFORE IT WAS SCRAPPED):D
ALSO CHECK THE TAIL PIPES FOR SIGNS IT WAS BURNING OIL, OR RUST INTERNALLY
(BLOWN HEAD GASKET)
AND CHECK THE DIP STICK FOR SIGNS OF RUST
TRY TO GET A PACKAGE DEAL WITH ALL ACCESSORYS INCLUDED
(EASY FOR THEM TO PULL THE FRONT CAP TO REMOVE THE ENGINE WITH A TOW TRUCK WRECKER)
THEY MAKE A FEW EXTRA BUCKS BUT YOUR LIKELY TO SAVE A GREAT DEAL OF WORK AND YOU GAIN A GREAT ACCESS TO MANY SMALL PARTS/BRACKETS

MY LOCAL SUPER MARKET HAS A BULLETIN BOARD
IVE PUT UP PICTURES OF A TRUCK I WAS LOOKING FOR WITH TEAR OFF MY PHOME NUMBERS SAYING i WANT TO BY A DAMAGED TRUCK (LISTING INFO LIKE MUST HAVE A 460 FORD ENGINE BODY CONDITION NOT IMPORTANT)

YOU MAY GET LUCKY I KNOW I HAVE HAD THIS WORK WHEN I LOOKED FOR bbc ENGINE IN THE PAST
I HAD A GUY SELL ME A RUNNING MOTOR HOME WITH A BIG BLOCK 454 FOR $350 THAT HAD A KITCHEN FIRE
AND i BOUGHT A TRUCK THAT HAD BEEN ROLLED FOR $700
