Can anyone ID this engine by these numbers?

Thanks, Grumpy. It's not mine or for sale. Unless you want the whole car. He might sell it.

Ive looked in several placces, DJ comes back as a 283, but the block number prevents a match

So the only way is to check bore and stroke?

  9. Grumpy

Grumpy The Grumpy Grease Monkey mechanical engineer. Staff Member

well thats conclusive in verifying the engine displacement,
but you know the block was originally a 4" bore, if thats the original casting number,
so depending on the stroke it could be anything from a 302-383 rather easily.
keep in mind thats assuming the block pad stamp is original, which it may not be.
(its harder but certainly not impossible to change casting numbers)

Chevy made more than a million of the 3970010 blocks between 69 and into the ‘80’s(Corvettes stopped in 1980). We know it’s not a late block because half way into ‘77, GM started for ‘78 making the stamping pad square and the stamping very straight. And only a few “. . . . . . 010” castings were made for the 1969 Z/28s. The 283 as mentioned - not possible.
The OP’s is likely over the counter stock, restamped at a rebuilder’s shop or a marine motor. That goofy looking “SP” stamp is likely someone tagging their ownership as some speed shops and others have done in the past.
