Hi from Germany

I couldn't wait, I installed the carb without spacer and regulator to see how it works. The engine was starting great, the idle was a bit too high at the beginning.

I'am still waiting for the carb studs and Gaskets, it should be here at wednesday. But I wanted to see how it looks with spacers and I started my "saladbowl air cleaner project". The bowl has an 11" opening where I put an K&N air cleaner top on it. I checked the space between bowl and hood, I have to rise the bowl a bit more than 3". I ordered a pipe to do this job. At the end I will put a piece of rubber on top of the air cleaner to seal it under the hood. The next step is than to cut a bigger hole in the hood and to readjust the correct position for the scoop. The scoop has to go 3.5" back in direction to the windshield to sit right above the opening.

I just watched Engine Masters last week when they tested the Salad Bowl along with several
other air cleaners. The salad bowl won. Is this where you got the idea?

The Coffin is supposed to be the Best Carb air filter layout.
What David Vizzard used.
Has to be fabbed from steel or aluminum and Tig welded together.
They sure do look odd.

What I have noted that running an open air filter element on my 63 Gp is how fast it gets Filthy .
Every 5000 miles I have to replace.

You're right. I saw this episode last year and wanted to try it one day.

Today the filter element arrived.

Do you mean this type of air cleaner / Ram Air?

tumblr_p68uxxCGF51sqsxtho1_1280.jpg

No. But that is very effective Ram Air.
1968 W30 Olds 455 442 had the best factory Ram Air Layout.

David Vizzard Loved IR Carburator Layouts like seen on Old V12 Ferrari's.
Delorto Carbs.

Its Literally a Count Dracula style Coffin sitting on Top Of the Engine He Built & Used.

Ah ok. I nevver saw this coffin and can't find a pic in the net. In whick book is it? I only have the Holley and the SBC book.

I cutted a bigger hole in the hood, know it has 9". I marked a the holes for the scoop and filled the old ones with an epoxy clay. I used the clay on the inside of my new air cleaner too.

OK, it could be better. I'm in the tuning phase. But on Tuesday I got a brake issue, I got a soft pedal when I cruised around the block. I lost a bit of brake fluid at an Tee fitting. I'm solving this problem first and than try again to tune the carb.

its all a continuing & never ending learning process, as long as you never give up thing's will generally improve over time

Rock steady dead on accurate fuel delivery with no pressure spikes or drops is what I have learned to have with any brand carburator or style.
At idle and at WOT Testing down the road.
Problems often do not show up till 80-100 mph pulling super hard in 3rd or style 4th high gear.

Only way to be sure is to an Autometer fuel pressure guage mounted inside the car to see at all times.
Or mounted on outside of the car at backside of hood near winshield.
Mounted at rear of hood is best.
Never have to take your eyes off the road.
Most ignore these tips.
But I learned 1st hand 20 years ago....

Mallory Comp 110 & 140 series pumps my favorite to use on street playing.

Another good carb fuel pump is by Fuel Labs.

Can argue about many others.
Comes down to real world testing on the streets and real feedback by others Pros and Cons each.

I plan to use a electric fuel pressure gauge inside the car in the near future, that is coming in the 4 gauge panel underneath the dash. I also use a vacuum gauge inside the car.

I looked at the stewart warner deluxe fuel pressure gauge, I think it will do the job too.

For the gauges. I build a prototype of an gauge cup. Thats for water temp, oil pressure und the tach.

Here is the 4 gauge panel, the AFR gauge is in, next to it comes the vacuum gauge, the fuel pressure gauge and the voltmeter

I will check out your recommend fuel pumps.

Kinda neat when I see Autometer Gauges used across the world.
I have been to there manufacturing plant to a 5.00" inch memory recall racing tach repaired of theirs.
Sycamore is very close to me.
40 miles.
