High Flow Quiet Exhaust

Its Gold today.[/QUOTE]
That's why I was sending you these items just in case one is rare and worth getting. If you wanted something out here I could get for you or hold it for a later date.

I found most of the Hardware to put 2-1/2 " inch Dual Exhaust on the 1968 Catalina Convertible.
Won't get it done for $100.00.
More like $1200-$1500.
Post this weekend.

I can TIG weld and have one too. Doug headers is the only one that makes headers that fit a '68 Catalina. I think they are almost $700

My biggest problem came today.

I'm learning to either leave this car alone or sink a ton of money into it.
I should have known better then to get a car that is rare and these days, unpopular. it's true you can't put lipstick on a pig . . . .
And the same can be said - " You can't put a convertible on a pig and not still be a pig!"

I wanted to upgrade the exhaust from 2 inch poorly designed to a 2.5" mandrel bent exhaust and the trouble begins.

No shops to do Mendrel bending. No exhaust companies make any exhaust parts for the big cars and I don't live in Southern Cal or have friends on the TV shows "OverHaul" or "Hot Rod TV"

I just got home from work in Chicago.
Race Shop.
Earned good $.

NO WHINING ALLOWED.
IF YOU HAVE $50,000-250,000 CASH GO BY THE GTO.

chromebumpers!

your really not FACING MUCH OF A PROBLEM , youll simply want to do some accurate measuring and use that TIG WELDER and a accurate miter saw to fabricate an exhaust that fits the application from easily available pre-mandrel bent exhaust pipe sections.
while having access to a lift is great , having the car up in a drive way can still allow the custom exhaust too be built, with that catalina up on 4 12 ton jack stands.

Summit and at least several dozen other suppliers sell semi-universal 2.5" exhaust kits rather reasonably

Grumpy! See the first photo - That's exactly the way I want my exhaust to run, neat and uniform straight down the middle.
I didn't know this until yesterday, Pypes headquarters is less than 10 miles down the road. While I was talking to the shop foreman at Pypes I remembered there use to be a big shop next door that had a couple dozen Pontiacs of all types. As it turns out that shop belonged to Pypes and they were sold off. Today that spin-off is known as "Ames Performance Engineering.

Pypes makes a down pipe, an X pipe kit, and an intermediate kit. I can buy 52" 2.5" straight pipe sections and with a couple of mufflers I should be able to piece together a complete system.

Be Ficken Stupid to install Race Headers on the 1968 CATALINA CONVERTIBLE.

YOU DON'T RACE RICHARD.
HAVE NO DESIRE TO.
CONSTANT MAINTENCE REQUIRED .
YOU HATE THAT.

There You Go Richard.
1965 Pontiac Catalina 2+2 Factory Long Branch exhaust manifolds.
Pattered off of the 1961-63 SD 421 Factory Aluminum Exhaust manifold headers.

There are special head pipe cast iron flanges to use I dont have pictured.
And a very special 3' inch thick machined oil filter adapter mounting block that Re clocks the the oil filter in a different plane direction.
Post pictures of them later.

I never had any thoughts of any headers. I just wanted to know what people were doing with 2V 400 cu in Ponchos.

I could never build this car or anything this big for racing. These big cars float over the road and the steering can leave you wondering what the road is really like under the tires. It's scary and too easy to over steer and loose control on these big old cars even though I had 2 weekends at 2 different race schools when I bought my Z06 (one was on GM, the other paid for by the dealer).

I just wanted to ad some performance characteristics and have some of that Pontiac Muscle sound. If you look at the driver's side manifold it looks like it's a 1.75 inch pipe going into a 2" pipe. Someone said I need to get the exhaust manifolds from a long branch 1969 Firebird 400 and a oil filter adaptor so that I can make a 2.5" exhaust work the best with a factory cast iron manifold that avoids any need for headers. I know that aftermarket pipes will bolt up, I just wanted better breathing off the heads.
Btw, it was "said" by the seller that "he heard" the guy who rebuilt this motor upgraded the cam to be just a tiny bit beefier than stock.
I never believe these rumors. When this car was listed on eBay in Sept. '09 it had a "fresh rebuild" (their words). Today the motor doesn't look that good for a six or seven years old and about 6,000 miles. The paint job sucks!

thanks for posting the great pictures BRIAN!

Besides a '56 Caddy, and a '63 Big block Ford Galaxy 500 being big cars, I never had any trouble finding parts (or perhaps I didn't need any "rare" parts). It's my personal mental problem that I really dislike holding any car that can't increase in value or it will never even hold value against the costs of restorations. If you follow investors who are successful they will execute automatically orders to sell if the stock, or whatever, drops by 10% . Aside from personal attachment,
Car collectors will make room by selling any under performing car or cars that don't seem to increase or just "hold collectable interest."
That's why you'll see Reggie Jackson buy a COPO Camaro last year and sell it this year. Big time collectors buy something for $650,000 and sell it 5 years later for $500,000. Move around 100 or more cars a year and you will see they're actually making a shit load of money looking at the "big picture."
