hog hunting tips

Ive shot and killed dozens of hogs over the last 40 plus years, and in about 90% of the cases Ive used a 44 mag revolver or marlin lever action carbine, in 444 ,marlin, 450 marlin,45/70 or 44 mag, hogs are generally shot at ranges of under 120 yards where I hunt, the key is selecting an accurate hard cast bullet, or soft point jacketed bullet with a thick jacket that penetrates well and knowing your hog anatomy , all the vitals are located forward between the front legs so the bullet should be targeted to zip thru that area, don,t go for what would be a lung shot on deer because on a hog your far more likely to hit guts than lungs shooting that far back, a decent hard cast 44 mag slug will put a hog down very quickly but a 444 marlin, 45/70 or 450 marlins 300-405 grain slug does it even faster with a good hit. you can drive a bullet thru that between the front leg area if the hogs close (5-30 feet,) by driving it in to the neck/shoulder area at the neck, if hes facing you for an instant stop, shearing the spine as it punches thru and exits, between the legs in the lower chest.(thats important to know if charged) but in most cases hogs will choose running away, in 40 plus years Ive been charged or attacked far fewer times than you might suspect was common, Ive frequently seen hogs just randomly run in the direction they were facing when startled, and if thats toward you that is not necessarily a charge, their eye site is poor they have good hearing and great noses

one of my neighbors just got back from a recent hog hunt where he used a 458 win mag Ruger #1 single shot loaded with a 480 grain hard cast NEI bullet over a stiff load of IMR 4831 that Id loaded for him, he said the result of a 70 yard shot was it looked like an invisible truck had hit the hog, knocking it spinning and busting both shoulder before exiting
