many older muscle cars did not come with a tachometer or its located where you must take your eyes off the road to see it easily, never a good Idea , so many guys installed a better quality aftermarket tach, on the steering collum or dash, to keep track of the engine rpms
you can get a good functional tach for under $50 or pay up to $1600 for one with extra features like, memory and a computer control on engine functions

1

Determine where you want to mount the tachometer inside your vehicle. Most tachometers come with a mounting device to attach to the steering column.
2

Run the wiring from the tachometer into the engine compartment.
3

On the tachometer will USUALLY be a black ground wire, a red wire and a green wire. Ground the black ground wire to the battery.
4

Locate your car's ignition coil. The ignition coil will be located in different places on different cars; consult your owner's manual.
5

Hook the red wire to the positive side of the ignition coil.
6

Hook the green wire to the negative side of the ignition coil.
7

If your tachometer has a fourth wire, it is for a light and can be hooked into your car's lighting system by splicing it into the wires that go into the dash. This is where you would use the wire strippers and electrical tape.

most tachs Ive installed had 4 wires.... GREEN goes to the dist. the hei has a male spade connecter on the cap with the other connections, if you dont have a factory tach, this will not have anything plugged into it.... BLACK is the ground, hook this to a good chassis ground. you should be able to use the dash for a ground... RED is power, run this to your fuse panel. you should have a male spade connector on it marked IGN... and WHITE is for illumination, run this to the fuse panel on the male spade connector marked LTS or lights
(dash illumination) be sure you run the green wire through a grommet in the firewall so it doesnt short out on metal
