well in my case I drive out from Florida to Colorado most years with a truck with coolers in the rear bed, I Bone an elk out, and use plastic bags, dry ice..

yeah! I generally bring at least one, most years three, 180 quart cooler, dozens of 2 gallon zip-loc bags and a few 42 gallon trash bags , you simply fill the trash bags aboout 1/8 with dry ice, drop in the sealed 2 gallon zip-loc bags of elk meat then cover with more dry ice, and tie the trash bags closed and place them in the cooler youll usually get three filled in a 180 quart cooler with meat and dry ice, youll want to use about 33-38 lbs of dry ice packed on top and mixed between the plastic bags for a 30hour trip with a boned elk in that cooler, once the elks meats frozen, which usually takes several hours and at least 15-20 lbs of dry ice to initially freeze the meat, (thats not part of the 33-38 lbs of dry ice packed on top and mixed between the plastic bags for a 30hour trip) youll arrive home with meat 100% solidly frozen it takes me 40-44 hours to drive from Colorado to south Florida and the meats still solid but about 80% of the dry ice has evaporated at that point.
we pack water and food in the coolers for the trip out, and meat on the return trip, dry ice is colder and won,t leave water in the cooler so properly used it keeps the zip loc bags of meat solid frozen
we pack water and food in the coolers for the trip out, and meat on the return trip
the amount of dry ice youll use, depends on the size of the elk, the coolers and how you pack the meat, we had several coolers and it takes several hours and 10-20 lbs of dry ice to freeze an elks meat in a cooler after its already down to air temp in 40 degree weather,, and keep in mind we generally cool the elk and de-bone it and place the meat in zip lock bags well before we stick it in coolers,we generally went into about every other day and bought 10-12 lbs of dry ice per cooler, then when we left for the drive to florida we dropped 15-20 lbs in each cooler for the 44 hour trip, that generally kept meat solid
