how many guys like those BROWNING AUTOS for hunting elk

now about 40 plus years ago I purchased a BAR in 338 caliber ,it's almost too pretty and shiny to hunt with, but I found a slip over camo sock, for the rifle when hunting, now at the time I was thinking this would be a fantastic ELK hunting tool, I installed a 2x7 Leopold scope, on the rifle and loaded it with several different handloads, I quickly found it liked some ammo much more than others but a hornady 200 grain or a 225 grain over a reasonable load of Winchester 760 with a fed 215 primer proved to give consistent 1" groups of the bench.
I figured Id use my 340 wby for locations where Id have long shot prospects, and use my 375 h&h sako, my 45/70 marlin or the BAR in the heavy cover, where I spend most of my time hunting.
I took it as my back-up rifle on a couple hunts and I managed to kill a few mule deer with the rifle, over the years but having it in my hands seemed to repel ELK about as well as a forest fire, as I rarely saw elk if holding it, but it seemed to attract mule deer, but it had plenty of use in friends hands and I've had several offers to sell it , but its done really well on mule deer so IM keeping it.
high quality scopes, proper install procedures and the better quality scope mounts goes a long way toward reducing problems
you don't need to buy the most expensive mounts or rings but a decent quality mount is critical.
IVE never yet had a properly installed weaver style base and rings fail

Ive seen lots of cheap mounts fail
no its never jammed with good ammo and it functions even in sub-zero temps and its accurate, recoil is absorbed to a large degree by the action, in fact its recoil reminds me of my 30/06 slide action, Ive seen very few used in the field so I'm assuming these are not that popular or the cost is prohibitive

I had one of those 742 rifles I bought on sale as did several of my friends, the quality varied quite a bit, the one I bought would not keep a 3"-4" group at 100 yards, but my friends rifle with the same ammo would shoot 1.7" groups every day
I found that strange since Ive owned several 760 slide action remington rifles and I still use a 35 whelen slide action and all the remington slide action rifles are consistently reasonably accurate that Ive seen (under 2")
I sold mine and got a BAR that would hold 1" groups with most ammo and even tighter with some select ammo
theres no comparing the quality but the price is also significantly higher on the BAR

the guys who were my mentors were all old geezers in their 50s-60s and I was only20,
at the time but Id read everything I could find for years about hunting, larger game.
I had been invited to go along on an out of state mule deer and elk hunt in 1968, in Colorado!
most of the areas I saw or hunted in looked similar to these pictures

I have never hunted elk but I use a BAR 30.06 for whitetail. Mine has never jammed and is as accurate, as any bolt action. I have used it for the past ten years and it will still bust a match stem at 100 yds.

Ive always been rather curious as to why the Remington 740,742 7400 semi autos are fairly common in the field, but the BARs are rather rare, now obviously theres a significant price difference, the BAR has always cost about 40%-50% more than the Remington,
but, in my experience , the quality of the BROWNING guns and the difference in accuracy, and dependability,
you see, MORE THAN JUSTIFYS THE ADDED COST,:like:

I've seen more than enough added quality and dependability, comparing the two, that it in my opinion,
fully justifies any serious hunter spending the difference in the up front cost ,
plus you can't get a 300 mag, 7mm mag,338 mag in the Remington design
I've rarely seen any BAR, that with decent ammo could not shoot under 1.5" 3 shot,
one hundred yard groups off a good rest, but its been rather rare in my experience to find a Remington thats, that accurate
and for sure the dependability favors the browning in my experience.

Ive owned and used a BAR in 30/06 for decades, its extremely accurate, and 100% dependable ,
never a failure, too feed, fire, or function, but then I keep rifles very well maintained.
Ive used it on several mule deer hunts and the only issues Ive ever had were it is too shiny/flashy
to use without a cover to keep it from reflecting like a mirror, an easily cured problem
with a set of cheap tye dyed green/grey/tan womens support hose, slipped over the stock and forearm
and a couple rubber bands

52 grains of H414 and a 215 fed primer produces decent consistent accuracy in my bar
these bullets are lethal on mule deer and elk,
Ive loaned the BAR out in the past to others and had zero complaints,
with the result on a couple elk others have shot,
in fact two guys eventually purchased similar BARs after using mine.

Laugh if you will Brain but it works well. I was taught that at an early age. I also use tampons soaked in does urine to hang in areas where I hunt. Keep a few in a plastic bag on ice and set one out every couple days to keep scent fresh.

I have always been a Remington model 700 fan myself. I built a range on our property and have taken two shots from 5ooyds with my 7mm mag BDL . Both were in side of a 12" circle. Not the best group but non the less not bad at that distance. Most all my hunting shots are taken around 50yrds anyway.
As far as acuracy... I practice pushing plastic thumb tacks thru the backstop at 100yds. Well to be honest... that was 15 years ago, when my eyesight
was a hell of alot better than it is now.

No.
Just old timer smart improvising.
Just imagine Grumpy going into his wife's dresser stealing her Panty hose.
Gets caught.
Lol.

Nothing works better than a Lady's makeup mirror set on the ground to see what your doing installing Pontiac V8 headers.
It's torture. Just look in the mirror.
See perfect then.

not panty hose support hose and tye dyed in green/grey/tan stripes
so the support hose look similar to this before being stretched over the stock on the rifle, the object is having a dull, non-reflective and muted outer cover protecting that rifle stock while you hunt

I got asked "how do you tie dye "

ok, your local hardware or grocery store will carry fabric dyes, and plastic gloves,
youll generally want tan, light grey, green dyes
I generally wet the socks , and then squeeze dry to moist texture,
,tie the socks in tight knots ,
dribble lines of alternating ,
green and grey colors,
the socks are already tan
let the dye set for several hours, then wash with dish detergent in a large bucket outside with a garden hose
now set the dye color into the fabric with mild heat,
in your dryer in low heat
don,t mix with other clothes as the support sox ,
will leach dye during the first couple washes
pattern is not critical, you just want blotchy/ stripes of grey.tan/green

this needs to be re-applied after a wash cycle but youll rarely need to wash the camo covers,
the water repellant spray stinks until it airs out for a day,
or so, so hang out in the sun on a outdoor clothes line
