Ive been reading some of Grumpy's bits and pieces hither and yonder and decided to join the group. Name is Michael Hill, I retired from local 10 Iron Workers in Kansas City three years ago and decided to pursue my passion for old Chevy trucks. I own two 1972 C/10's, "Belle" and "Nasty Sally" and have been full on into the restoration process for several years now. They're both long beds, Belle having a factory wood bed, factory 350 cubic inch with a Lunati Voodoo Cam, Performer intake w/Quadrajet. She has a HD 350 Turbo, 3:73 12-bolt Posi, 16" Chrome Smoothies w/ baby moons with General 8 ply's all around. She's my daily driver and tow vehicle. She does have factory overloads and I went ahead and installed a set of 3/4 ton springs to handle a 2000lb 20' tandem trailer, loaded with 3500lbs of Nasty Sally.
Nasty Sally is a 1972 long bed 1/2 ton C/10 thats undergone some mods, I've built her into the 72 SS-C/10 that GM should have built but didn't, so I did! She has a 1969 SS L34 396 bored .060" over, TRW forged aluminum 25cc domed pistons. Cast iron 101cc closed chambered 3964290 heads with some work to make them compatible with a Comp 268H Cam. Comp roller rockers, rods and guides. Weiand intake, Cliff Ruggles Quadrajet tuned on and for a built L34. After I blew up an $1800 Monster Trans 350 Turbo, I bought the tools and manuals and started building my own 350 "Super Turbo's". I still run a beefed up two piece drive shaft linked to a period correct and hand built, tubes welded 4:56 12-bolt Posi with studded Moser caps and girdle. I'm currently running 15" chrome reverse wheels w/baby moons, 5" x 26" Mickey Thompson Sportman Pro's up front, Sportsman Pro 29X15.50-15" out back. She's been lowered, roll pans, SS cowl induction hood in the works. She's a blast on the street, all the rich farm kids come out to roust the old man with old Chevy to measure their built diesels. I'll get her out and go get a burger at the local Sonic Drive In and it's never long before one of them kids roll up in their late model LS or diesel pick up and say, "wanna run that old bucket old man?" I finish chewin my burger and ask, "got any money kid?" "Nasty Sally needs new shoes"... ;) Heres a short video of Sally's winning run at the Midwest Truck Nationals burnout contest last fall...

I start out by drilling, tapping and plugging one of the reverse feeds and redirecting it to stay on the direct clutches. This is a fix that should have occured on all HYPO GM transmissions but didn't. https://www.google.com/search?q=fred+korematsu&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8 As out lined here by pro from the 67 - 72 Chevy Truck Forum. Every forum has it's proven experts and Clinebarger is one of those. He's an old hand, old enough to remember and have worked for GM since 350's and 400 turbos came on the scene, to rule the HWY's. ;) The weakest point on a 350 turbo is a debate, the bushings on the drum, or the low reverse sprag & roller clutch. I beef up both by putting a (dont have the PN at the moment) 3/4" wide bushing in the drum, and the ultimate case saver, http://www.ebay.com/itm/TH350-TH350...hash=item1e14ed63c:g:CHgAAMXQ74JTVwRl&vxp=mtr with a borg & warner 700r4 hardened sprag & a 27 element low reverse roller clutch. Then, I install a Transgo SK-350 reprogramer kit in the valve body. I also brake lathe the low reverse piston to accept an extra steel and friction, as well as the intermediate clutch piston to bump it from four to five frictions & steels. If you use Alto Red Eagle frictions, add $175. You can drop more for ratio changes, trick drums, and five element planitaries, trans breaks and the such but the above will render a quite impressive, 750+ HP capable 350 "Super Turbo"... I havent ventured into the 350C's or the four speed overdrives, I run mine old school, 2000 stall, 1900 flash 12" HD converter in Belle, and a JEGS 2800 - 3200 stall 9.5" anti-balloon plated, brazed and balanced (very well mannered) converter. It still tells that 4:56 Posi what time it is when them 2-1/4" inch secondary flaps open up!
I must have caught Cliff Ruggles on a good day when I called Cliffs Performance last Fall. He not only answered the phone, when I told him what I had and what I wanted, he talked my ear off tellin me about his (identical motors, 408ci L34's) 69 SS Camaro. Long story short he said put the carb in a box with the cam profile and I'll take a look at it. It was a 4MV I bought from Summit for a 350 that just never ran right. He later indicated whoever built the carb before got the new bushings in crooked in the primary shaft. He rejetted and refitted the idle tubes, hung some trick metering rods, primary and secondary, installed new primary shaft bushings and tuned it on his Camaro! I took that carb out of the box and have only played with the idle, the mixture is tan perfect and no hesitation anywhere. I have the rev limiter set at 6000, she stop watches 1.6 in 60' with that 4:56. I went from a 3:08 Posi to this 4:56 Posi, and on them heated up DOT Sportsman Pro's, it feels like another 100 HP coming off that line! Cant wait for Heartland Park in Topeka to open I want a low 12 and maybe a high 11 time slip! High 13's with the 3:08, them stroker small blocks w/3000 stalls and 4:11, 4:56 rear ends were leavin me at the line! Once Sally got up to speed they were gone, 1/2 a block down the track! She was running them down on the big end but we just ran out of track...I'll post a pick of the dash tomorrow, everything's factory, with a Grant "period correct" SS steering wheel. Custom Autosound AM-FM Cassette. I have a new 72 truck tilt column yet to go in but scored and recovered a set of buckets out of a 72 Cheyenne Super w/console. I'm installing a floor mounted cable operated ratchet shifter as soon as I can, still column shifting that old girl! That reminds me, I reset (grind) the weights in the governors for a 5800-5900 rpm shift. Those fly weight governors are becoming a lost art, I like an automatic to shift for me at WOT leaving a couple hundred on the table, just in case... ;) Almost forgot! http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/showthread.php?t=685303

The suspension is for the most part stock. I had to replace and upgrade the trailing arm perches because she twisted off the factory perches! Out back is only 4" drop springs with a custom bent panhard (track) bar to clear the 12-bolt girdle. Heavy duty stiff, shorty shocks. Up front got 2-1/2" drop spindles, factory 1/2 ton coils w/1/2 coil cut off. I had BFG T/A 60's with 2" drop springs and she rubbed the fenders in the corners. So I canned the 2" drop springs, installed cut factory coils (because they're a stiffer rate with larger coils) to get a 1" additional drop for a total of 4-1/2 inches of drop w/the big block. Factory 1-1/4 "inverted" sway bar to clear the drop. HD stiff rate shorty shocks with an 85 fast rate steering box, (3-1/2 turns stop to stop to replace the 72 4-1/2 turn box)...She hooks good and oddly enough steers flat like a Corvette. Factory 11" discs up front, rear drums plugged at MC for winning burnouts...She still has plenty of stopping power but installing a line lock w/adjustable bias.

THANK YOU!
thats very useful info that a good many members on this web site will appreciate!
I wish everyone posted all the details they can think of ,
on BOTH the good and bad things they found on each build!
