HOWDY TO ALL THAT LOVE HP, NOISE, BURNT RUBBER, RACING FUEL, AND PISSING OFF ENVIRO WHACKO'S AND GUN

Hello, I am John Robel, 62 years gearhead. Been around RACING in the pacific Northwest (the left coast, ughh) most my life. Been involved with oval and drag racing, tour cars, open comp, sprinters, super mods, mods, Nascar West NHRA, AHRA, NWSSA, ASA, and now WESCO. I've been away for a while to raise a family and have avoided the track quite a bit because when I smell it, hear it, feel it, I GOTTA DO IT ! My son (wild ass) and I have a late model and an historical Barnett sprint car. My health ain't gettin' any better so we've decided to go do it "one more time". Yeah right. My, how time changes things and what was the hot ticket even 20 years ago is junk now. Cross drilled cranks for example, "Fuelly heads" used to get you by in the lesser classes. While I LOVE old SMOKEY, Grumpy, and Waddell, those books are dated nowadays. I bought ALL of David Vizards books as well as DYNO SIM5 and Chassis RD advanced asphalt setup software. Still have my caster/camber and bump steer tools from Long Acre as well as a Bridgeport, 12x48 Sheldon lathe, old Sioux valve grinder, Miller Mig and Tig, and Quick Way boring bar. (don't worry, I WONT use the valve grinder or boring bar on ANY performance work). Building a new engine for the sprinter and WESCO rules are the following-- flat tappet cams (ouch), flattop pistons, any IRON head, any "production" crank and rods, Dry Sumps okay on alky, with a 365 cid limit. So my thoughts are Callies CompStar crank 3.562 stroke (light weight) Callies 6.125 rods, DSS 2618 coated pistons, Gapless rings, Clevite coated bearings, billet timing set, Dave Vizards Grind Lunati DV298-08FSH cam, nitrided forced lube lifters, Dart Platinum 215/49cc/205,106 heads, beehive springs, with my old Hillborn 3 piece 2 3/16 injection and vertex magneto, gambler 3 stage dry sump. I'd like to see around 600 hp at 7200. Everything will get the coatings and hardenings available.

You will need at least 250-275 cfm intake port Iron heads with a full bore Circle track cam.
Isky Cams are excellent.
What we used dirt tracking here in Illinois.
Welcome to Grumpys.

Short tracks a smaller CC runner head and less flow potential will work nice.

1 mile tracks you need Brute Horsepower for speeds 140+

If possible you want a static compression ratio of 14.0 :1.
No higher with iron heads otherwise you will need 116-120 motor octane drag race gasoline.
$20 bucks a gallon now the Real Go Fast Drag Fuel.

114 Race Gas I have in mind.

110 motor octane use 12.0:1 static compression with iron heads.

At the 1/2 mile here in Spokane we were turning over 160 in the chutes when Proper crashed with an engine very similar in his old Sneva car. My sprinter "wet" weighs only 1700 lbs. We HAVE TO RUN ALKY.

Varying the deck height my figures get me between 12.2 to around 13.5 to 1 depending on gaskets and such. That's plenty for alky and I want this to live. There isn't enough purse money to get really "trick" and you're physically and fiscally limited by the piston rule. That was the point by the rules committee. I disagree with the "flat tappet" rule saving money vs roller. A nitride "brand" cam and the best iron lifters and you're at roller money. I've been building engines for decades.

You sir got more experience that 90% of us here, you just need to update your knowledge base to be current. I will be looking forward to your build.

While I LOVE old SMOKEY, Grumpy, and Waddell,
I still have my copy of "Racing Engine Preparation" by Waddell Wilson and Steve Smith.

Ok.
Meth.
Methanol Alcohol.
Be more responsive at 14.0 :1.
It will Live.
Be up 40 hp or more at 7000 rpm

Looking over your list again

FORGET ABOUT USING BEE HIVE VALVESPRINGS.
ITS AN EDURANCE ENGINE AND DRAG RACE BOTH.

If budget allows Diamond Pistons made be ideal.

Wiseco Ok.
They do not like engines running lean on a bad tune or failing fuel sysyem.
Fall apart fast.
Seen it.

With a Solid Flat Tappet Cam Rule you do not want to exceed .675 lift.
Reliability suffers with higher valve lifts.
.575"- .650" best target.

Rocker arm ratio SBC should be 1.5 - 1.65 to 1.

Roller cams can use the 1.7 to 1.9 ratio rockers and live.

Welcome aboard sounds like fun project I like isky solid flat tappets also like Maniac. Looking forward to your build look I used vizards cam theory for my last build and High rev isky flat tappet gave a c5 a run with a 355 195 afr headed engine at 9.5:1. Opened his eyes up thought he was just gonna blow me away.

I have ideas.
Miss Dirt Tracking.
Magical SBC Stoker Combos.

We Raced 1/4 Mile oval Clay dirt.
LaSalle Illinois.
Peoria Illinois.

Did it from 2006-2012.
Not stop action.
Violence at times in the Race Pits too.
Cops Called many times.

One night I pushed Our Totalled 1967 Chevelle Street Stocker onto the car trailer with my old 1973 Lincoln Mark IV 460 Continential.
I was so mad.
From 100 feet away I rammed the Chevelle up on the trailer.
People ran.
Got out they hid from me.

Be sure to spend time reading here on Grumpys.
He has data files not found anywhere else.

Grumpy has Road Race experience.
Rick was a dirt track driver back in the day.
I was the Pit mechanic crew chief dirt track.
Lots of experience also with drag cars and fast street cars.
