I always like this guy...

Ive watched that tape, several times before in the past , he brings a good deal of experience, to the discussion, points out stuff many guys never consider and I tend to agree with most but not all of the info presented.
I will point out that the tapes several years or maybe over a decade old now and his statements about bullet selection , and what is available or preferred in ammo, while valid at the time are no longer limited by the few choices THEN available, and the 40 s&w and 10mm pistol ammo, are no longer a semi unknown proposition with a very limited track record that they were at the time of the tapes production. Id suspect fully 1/3rd-1/2 of the police departments in the country carry 40 cal hand guns currently

the most popular handgun calibers used by that state police in 49 states are (HI has no state police agency, hence only 49 states):

.40 S&W - AL, AK, AZ, CA, CO, CT, IL, IO, KY, LA, MD, MA, MI, MN, MS, MO, NE, NV, ND, OH, OR, UT, VT, WA, WI, WY (26)
.357 Sig - DE, MT, NM, NC, OK, RI, SD, TN, TX, VA (10)
.45 ACP - AR, ID, KS, ME, NH, WV (6)
.45 GAP - FL, GA, NY, PA, SC (5)
9mm - IN, NJ (2)
and yes a PROPERLY LOADED 10mm has a great deal more energy available than the 40 S&W, and with PROPER PROJECTILES its very effective, offering about 200 fps more velocity than the 40 S&W, Ive shot a few hogs and deer with a 10mm and its effective

Heheheh - I figured you'd chime in… and particularly about the fact that this video isn't quite up to date.

I'd been struggling for a long while trying to make some sense about stopping power of a caliber.

I had shot an FN 5-7 over here. I liked the way it reacquired, the supersonic bullet, as well as 20 in the mag.

This video however made me discard the idea altogether …particularly minute 13:00

(I admire his skill BTW)

That, and the fact that ironically enough, the FN 5-7 is not available here  So that point became moot anyway.

I finally sprang for the P226 because: it seemed comfortable in my hand; I liked the absence of safety but the presence of a decocker; I liked the ease of use; I like its iron reputation and the price was right.

The trigger has a good reputation, but this being Belgium, I could not try it out at the range.

Then there's the ammo - the eternal question of 9mm vs .45 and everything in between. ($10 and $20 respectively)

The HK I was looking at was 8 x .45 in the mag, or 12 x 9mm. Hmpf!

The Sig offers 15 + 1

So finally, I tipped for Sig P226 9mm thinking that, considering everything else, it is a good platform to start with and I won't be disappointed with it overall.

Mr. Massad Ayoob makes a good point however - later in the video he discusses stopping power and makes the case that for quality 9mm or .45 rounds, (and not enough data for the in-between) stopping power is not quantifiable for handguns. Many factors are involved including shot placement, target's attitude, balance, etc.

I like the anecdote about the guy who cleaned his gun with WD40 and the fainting attacker was a good case in point.

(His "shoot 'em in the nuts" bit is a bit strange. As Eric Cartman would say: that's not cool. :D )
