Every time I need a part, it doesn't matter where I call or go to, most times it's not there and must be ordered and will be in the next day. Unless it's so common even Walmart would carry it, chances are it's in the warehouse.
You pull customer's car in and it needs something not available doesn't that throw your appointments times off?
I have a car that has a carb that was made by the tens of millions and nobody has the in carb filter? No crank case filter? A common truck that needs widely used U joint? No rebuild arts for a OEM factory QJets?
No rebuild parts for a any pre 90s deco alternator. The parts stores are not much better than ordering over the Internet anymore.

Ive always been a bit amazed at the fact that most guys seem to stick with a single or at best a very few limited parts sources, now obviously if they can supply anything you need at a decent price and supply it quickly and its good quality theres not much reason to shop around further, but I see guys all the time that ask me where I can get a certain tool, or performance part, who have not a clue where I got some of the components I use, and the fact that a good many of the older speed shops have gone out of business does not help either , so Id suggest that sometimes looking at the circle track suppliers, and the dirt track and kit car and hot rod shops helps, as does sending away for parts catalogs.
now you may have zero intention of using 90% of what many catalogs list, but you might be amazed at what the differences in the smaller components , and tools available are if you look closely.
and it certainly can,t hurt to look over options you might have never considered.
yes the larger suppliers like JEGS, and SUMMIT and ROCK AUTO have a large inventory, but at times you'll find a part you need is only available from a few or a single rather obscure source, or a firm that specializes in that particular type of component or in some cases you'll need a firm that custom fabricates parts

does anyone have a local speed shop with reasonable prices?
I do a good deal of my parts shopping over the internet, mostly because in about 1/2 the cases when I do bother to drop into what passes for a local speed shop the place either needs to order the parts as they are not in stock or the price they ask is LUDICROUS,
example the last price i was quoted for BRODIX HEADS was $200 more than BRODIX list price, and an edelbrock intake I can get almost anyplace was a good $60 more at that speed shop
I just can,t normally force my self to spend 30%-150% more for the exact same parts I can buy on line and while I really want to support the local guys its just not practical most of the time, I was qu0ted $60 for bbc valve cover gaskets last time I stopped by,heres a few I found on line

I'm just referring to when I need something Now, I go to either a nearby NAPA or Advance Auto and it seems if I need something other than batteries, brakes, tie rods and ball joints it has to be ordered. The parts I'm looking for are for repairs not speed or restoration parts. I went into the region's largest NAPA store that is owned by the regions largest new car dealer and asked for a rebuild kit, filter choke pull off, crank case filter, valve cover gaskets and thermostat gasket. Everything needed to be ordered except for the carb kit. AA the same AZ, the same but no kit. Pep P. Nothing. All have lots of oils, cleaners/polishes and fan blades. God for bid anybody sold carry inventory!
I don't know why I did it but I had NAPA order me a choke pull off, but because it wasn't in their warehouse they had to order one through the manufacture so now I have to pay almost as much for shipping. It wouldn't have been any s&h if I went to Advance Auto.
 
Forget going to the local speed shops. If you're not well known to them they act put upon to even talk to you. They'll chat all day to the kids with ricers wanting turbos, 4" exhaust, halo lighting and Nos refills. Who needs them? Everything they have is a day or 2 away ordering on the Internet
 
I have been A loyal customer at my Favorite Speed Shop in Joliet for 22 years now.
They match Summits and Jegs prices 99% of the time.
Handle all but Crower and Isky Cams.
I order direct.

Going there in the morning .
Pick up Goodies for my 1965 Olds 425 A engine.

Summit Racing carries daily driver parts too.

No one. wants the Overhead inventory anymore Richard.
To Maximize monthly Sales quotas.
Parts not sold on the shelf is a loss to them.

I'm not asking for parts on a 70 RAMAIR IV, just a lousy fuel filter for a carb that was made for more then a decade for 10s of millions of GM cars, Obama didn't crush them all and not everyone switched to a Holley 750 double pumper! I'm sure there's a few around in every town in the great US of A, perhaps enough that a major parts store in a heavily populated classic car area could stock a $2 retail filter.
 
Around here none of the parts places will match an Internet company.

FYI - About 2 years ago I was at a franchise show looking to get my oldest son an opportunity. At the time there was a NAPA store near me for sale. At this show I learned a boat load of information and I primarily learned many of these businesses don't make a lot of money and if you live a high standard life you will fail in almost all of these businesses.
Every manufacture has their wholesale price that everyone big and small pays the same. Larger orders get shipping breaks and some financial help making pre inventory stock up. Parts stores make money primarily on volume and a tight ship helps squeeze a buck here and there.
All these shops can still make money matching any legitimately priced competitor (the difference between retail and wholesale but they can be too stubborn for their own good.
 
None are thrilled with Bam I have met in Chicago.
