I got a big grin out of a very short firearm related comedy video

your correct with a fast expanding bullet like many snipers use,
but results depend on the projectile used as much as the caliber or rifle,
Ive shot hogs with a 458 LOTT, 550 grain bullets at 2250 fps ,(6160 ft lbs
the big heavy calibers typically don't use expanding bullets,
they can, with hard cast bullets, produce less damage than a typical 300 mag,
as the solids, used in many big bore stopping rifles don't expand
they simply zip through effortlessly leaving about a 1" diameter hole entrance to exit.
remember a solid is generally designed to penetrate several feet of muscle and bone to reach the brain or heart on elephant or cape buffalo
or shoot length wise through the chest breaking shoulders on a charging a 1200 lb Kodiak bear
