I,m just curious how many of you gentlemen have used a tunnel ram intake?

one of the neighbors sons whose at least 30-32 years old, had recently found a used SBC tunnel-ram intake
(no carbs but it was in good condition and for sale for $120)

so seeing a weiand tunnel ram intake, was for sale at a very reasonable price at a local yard sale , he bought it and stopped by to ask what carbs he should purchase .
.. now keep in mind he never even considered he might not be able to close the stock hood with it installed ,
or that the stock HEI distributor won,t fit or clear and he will need a small diameter distributor so not a great deal of thought went into its purchase.
now properly set up a tunnel ram intake with properly tunned dual quads has always been one of my personal favorite intake combos...
so thois may eventually be a fun project.
(and for anyone who cares its potentially a 1969 nova with a slightly modified 350 sbc and a 4 speed manual transmission with a 3.73:1 rear gear combo),
I get a good many questions regarding dual quads but I don,t see them in use alot any more and thats a damn shame as properly set up they can be a lot of fun and provide impressive power.

his cars not nearly this pristine and its part burgundy (front fenders, trunk lid, and hood)
and part black, (cars original color) but it has potential,

I toyed around with an intake you are not a fan of Grumpy, the OFFY inline 2 x 4 SBC.
I had 2 Edelbrock 750 cfm AFBs on it on a 12.5:1 350 Chevy in a 68 Camaro with TH400 and 4.56 gears with a spool..
I thought it ran pretty well, for as little as I knew at the time.

yes Ive tried several engines with that intake,
- it makes fairly decent power over 5500-rpm,
but compared to many other, intake manifolds,
its wholly lacking in low and mid rpm torque.
(a fact you can,t fully appreciate without back-to-back testing,
of several different intake manifold ,designs on the same engine)
and yes I.m fully aware that rarely happens unless either a couple of your buddies have similar dual quad intake set-ups,
and those friends are willing to spend a day swapping several intakes and tuning them,
to see the results, or you have several different intake manifolds on your shop shelf,
and again, your willing to go through the time and effort.....
.most people won,t, but being a mechanic and masochist,
"A willingness or tendency to subject oneself to unpleasant or trying experiences. "
(almost mandatory in a good mechanic)

I've done it a couple times, and
yes theres a marked, easily seen and felt, difference,
between the designs that you can feel easily from the drivers seat.
and while a properly tuned dual quad intake can provide impressive power the tunnel ram design versions are almost universally the better designs, but of course hood clearance and the fact most people don,t want carbs sticking through the hood limits their wide spread appeal.
