b] ok all you transmission guys, IM also VERY interested in the answers because I purchased a 4L80E to install in my 1985 corvette when I do the swap to the big block engine , because theres no 700r4 thats going to handle the torque numbers that engine will produce, so any info will be greatly appreciated, on how to find cheap ECU/TRANS controllers OR how to modify the 4L80E trans to full manual control. hopefully theres some knowledgeable trans guys on THIS SITE that can help!!?? converters available ? lock up/non-lock-up? performance shift kits? ETC. IM SURE MOST GUYS CAN USE GOOD INFO! heres all the links Ive found......... NO! NOT ALL THOSE QUESTIONS ARE FULLY ANSWERED IN THE LINKS[/b]
does anyone have the part number for that manual converion KIT,? or other usefull info?, instructions on the conversion? programing and installation info on the electronic controllers?, part numbers and prices? other options?
does anyone know where a diagram for the connections can be found?
differances between the differant year 4L80E transmissions?
how do the 4L80E trans differ from year to year?
what are the part numbers for the TRANS CONTROLLERS
WHAT STALL SPEED CONVERTERS ARE AVAILABLE and with lock-up?
which are the best built?
what cross members fit?
what drive shaft yoke? part #?

HERES SOME INFO ON THE 4L80E

Hi Grumpy, did you ever come up with a good solution?I saw a post somewhere about a computer from an early 6.5 diesel but can't find much info with google.
Thanks Robie

I still have issues with the 4L80E in my '39. Still thinks it's in a truck, 'cause it shifts way early and "hunts" the correct gear at low throttle settings. Fine with a load or normal cruise....I still have my computer so I guess I need someone to reprogram it....

If youve had a TH350, 200r4, or 700r4 turn into scrap behind a mildly modified sbc, Id strongly suggest you cut the potential for further losses and get a th400,or 4L80E or a similar trans rebuilt, with heat treated quality parts as its NOT HORSEPOWER but HEAT AND TORQUE LOADS that destroys transmissions, you can reduce heat with a good trans cooler and deep pan, but, handling torque requires strong components and yes IM fully aware that a 200r4 can be built to handle 1000 hp, and a 700r4 can be built to handle 600 hp, but keep in mind
the formula for hp is
tq x rpm /5252=hp

so 400 ft lbs at 9000rpm=685hp
or 600 ft lbs at 6000rpm=685hp

guess which level of torque turns transmissions into junk faster
all the weaker transmissions listed have a MAX FACTORY TORQUE RATING of under 400 ft lbs
most of them can be improved, but the size of the components limits your optionsin the smaller lighter transmissions and a 4l80e can be built to handle 800ft-1000 lbs and 1200hp

heres computer controlled

shift kits vary, so do extensive research and ask detailed questions before you purchase parts and transmission shop technician skills are obviously at varied levels if you elect to have the kit installed professionally and in most cases , if you have a performance shift kit its not true full manual control, if that's the kit you buy,yes it should kick down, but as always ASK QUESTIONS before you buy any parts or shift kits
generally, full manual control kits will stay in the selected gear regardless of rpm or load, just like a manual transmission, you just don,t have a clutch petal to deal with

just as a question, do any of you gentlemen, reading through this thread,or do any of you have any suggestions as to where to get good quality tools required,or have some local place or internet site thats trust worthy that has most of or all the tools that may be used during a 4l80e trans rebuild, as I,ve generally found (as a tool junky ADMITTEDLY) that owning the required tools before I start a project like a transmission rebuilt will generally be beneficial
the more accurate info, and descriptions of what your doing in clear pictures the better,
if you have the opportunity to work on a transmission rebuild, posting
lots of clear detailed pictures with posted written commentary,
accurately detailing exactly whats being done, and details ,
on how and why each parts being selected, used and installed ,
would be very helpful to other members reading through this thread!
keep in mind easily 90% of the people reading the thread,
have never opened or worked on the automatic transmission internals,
nor any experience or idea what was or is required to do so!
AND YEAH! A LIST OF THOSE REQUIRED TOOLS AND PICTURES WOULD BE A HUGE BENEFIT IF ITS EASILY AVAILABLE.

Thank you! this is rather new,
Ive got the great majority of the more common engine rebuilding tools, simply because I've acquired those through necessity, as I've rebuilt well over a 140 plus engines (I lost count decades ago) but Ive only helped rebuild a few automatic transmissions so as a result I am sure Ill need a good many more tools.

The light switch method Phil came up with is the easiest and least expensive way to install the 4L80E and control it Grumpy.
Just run full line pressure .
With 800 Hp its what I would do.
No easy to get real $ today.
Just know from the past Big Blocks Rule.

It’s ironic that even though both of these strong overdrive transmissions come stock in all of GM’s automatic-equipped new cars and trucks, not many of them are finding their way into early performance musclecars. Perhaps that’s due to their weight and high initial cost. Or maybe it’s because they’re hard to find used in the scrap yards and many people don’t want to add a computer just to control the transmission. To make that task easier, JET Performance Products now offers a stand-alone computer-controlled system that will operate a 4L80-E transmission behind any carbureted or fuel-injected engine.

The 4L80-E Transconversion kit features its own computer with software that is custom-tuned to your vehicle’s specifications, providing the proper shift points, shift quality, and lockup torque converter function. Its wiring harness has a built-in diagnostic port that will allow the connection of the modern scanning electronics present in any Chevrolet dealership’s garage to track down and diagnose any transmission-related problems. The JET system will not interfere with any existing computer systems you may have already installed in your vehicle.

Its the only Bullet Proof Overdrive for the Group Grumpy.
People know how good they are here.
Need $400-900 just to buy a high mileage core here.
Never should have gave away both the Truck Van 2wd 4L80E's I had.
At least kept 1 for myself.

Turbo 400 fits my budget and needs.
Using some key 4L80E upgrade parts in my Tubo 400 build.
More on that later.
