Idle Speed & Stall Speed?

Trying to help another TBucket owner with the selection of a TC. He is not local so I can't verify and he does not sound too knowledgeable. He has the pan off the trans, so he can't check it, besides he says the Tach needle is bouncing alot. So you see there is alot of unknowns.

Where do you think this engine should idle in neutral?

305 SBC
Edelbrock Performer Camshaft
duration as advertised intake:278 exhaust:288
duration at .050 intake:204 exhaust:214
lift@cam(lobe) intake:0.28"exhaust:0.295"
lift@valve intake:0.42" exhaust:0.442"
lobe separation: 112deg intake centerline: 107deg

yeah, 800 rpm-850 rpm sounds about right for that cam/displacement
2200 stall is about right, but the stock torque converter stall is much more likely to be in the 1700 rpm range
the higher converter stall, matched too ideally, a 3.54:1 -3.73:1 rear gear ratio,
,will work, better that the stock lower stall speed but either can work.

Make him pay for advice or let him break something first.:D:D:confused::confused: Just kidding, but maybe you've told him you need more info to give a knowledgeable answer.

You guys called it! He found that his timing was set too low and now it idles at 800/neutral
and 600 in drive.
