Inline Transmisison Oil fileters (finned)

A lot of good information in these threads. Thanks - I haven't seen any discussion/recommendation regarding this type of oil cooler (tranny):

Looks like an interesting combo - filter inside and magnet to remove particlate. And it mounts to the frame if need be. I'd rather have threaded fittings than hose clamps on bib fittings - but thats a simple mod.

The only info I have found suggests that it - or similar removes up to 30 degrees of heat from the transmission oil (AFCO's Ads).
All the MOROSO ones say "Not Recopmmended for Street Use." Wonder Why that is - any thoughts? :?:

Also - if suitible - could it be installed without passing through the radiator - elminating another heat source for the radiaor to handle?

Thanks and Cheers - Jim

I know several people that ran those coolers , on their cars
oilcool2.jpg

and while they do work, they don,t work really well , at dropping the transmission fluid or oil temps and they don,t tend to remove or transfer to the air a good deal of the fluid heat, the problem is that the surface area and air flow rates over that surface area don,t work as effectively as the more effective coolers like these, certainly not well enough to bye-pass the in radiator trans cooler, and rely on that to cool your trans fluid.
Id suspect you would need about 6-8 of those coolers to equal the heat transfer rates of the single large radiator style fluid coolers with the electric fans if both designs are properly installed
yes you can get a bit more creative and build or buy something with significantly more surface area for increased cooling capacity, on your existing oil filter if you might feel inclined, and it may drop temps 5-10 DEG F, under low load cruising

Ive been using this recently on my transmission, as my 10 qt custom oil pan seems to provide adequate oil cooling by it self

heres a similar dual trans fluid & separate engine oil cooler

yeah Ive seen several guys who used air conditioning evaporators as fluid coolers and yes its always restrictive, too flow,
the tube size is way too restrictive,
your far better off buying a commercial fluid cooler with a power fan, version designed for that application with AN#8 or 1/2" tube / hose size

heres a cooler several guys I know use.

you will rather obviously need to carefully and accurately,
measure the location you want to install any fluid cooler and its fluid line connections, you should seriously consider a AN#8 line size as minimum
