intake sucking oil..

"Thought I would share a hair pulling story. My engine guy told me I was chasing my tail because I would have a water leak if my intake wasn't sealing. I have had the intake off three times trying to figure out, why I have oil in the intake ports, and the gaskets were soaked and pulling oil from the bottom side. It did not smoke but had a rough idle and oil on the plugs. I also had oil droplets on my bumpers after a run down the freeway. I thought the gaskets were slipping below the huge rectangular ports. I verified it is square with the heads and used sealer on the bolts. The problem was the end clearance on my intake (block walls to intake manifold ends resting on them) is only .045. The cosmetic head gaskets were making a small dent because they were protruding not more that .010 deep into the end gap seal area, on all four corners of the intake manifold to block wall seal ares . I filed a notch in the edge of the intake manifold edge to clear the tips of the head gaskets that were the source of the obstruction and it is now running like it should. Smooth idle and sounds better too. I've been doing this stuff for 50 years and this is a first. "

trimming off any excess head gasket tip that protrudes into the seal area with a sharp chisel, and dimpling both the block forward and rear rails and the matching intake surfaces before applying a 1/4" thick bead of sealant to both surfaces help maintain a good oil seal on the intake to block end gaskets on the intake

youll occasionally find uses for a high temp rated silicone sealant
like ultra-copper that has about twice the temp tolerance of the common black RTV

HEY? GRUMPY,
My #8 plug has fouled very quick. I'm not seeing any smoke out the tail pipe from the driver's seat. I replaced the valve seals with positive seal type - same problem. Is there a test that can tell me if oil is being sucked into the intake runner between the head & intake on the bottom side?
Do you have any other suggestions?
72 Chevelle, all stock, I've owned since new. 350 "H" engine. Thanks a bunch!

yes I have, youll eventually want to,pull the darn intake and replace the gasket and inspect the old gasket very carefully
chances are excellent that if the lower seal on that intake ports been sucking oil from the lifter gallery its going to show on the gasket, and its just not that difficult, or expensive or time intensive to replace, or inspect, if that doesn,t show the potential oil leak you may have a busted ring in that cylinder causing your problem, so do a leak down test first, and be aware that worn valve guides, or detonation damage on rings or pistons can also cause one cylinder to burn more oil
