Interesting V-6 and some history

Those GMC V6s were torque monsters, but limited to I think 3200 - 3400 rpms, they would pull anything. I rebuilt a 305, 351, and (2)478s in high school. Interesting engine, I saw a v12 too in a 4 or 5 ton truck back in 1979 or 1980. That engine was very cool looking, and very long. It has one common engine block, one common crankshaft, one common camshaft, it had a common distributor drive but two distributors. It had two intake manifolds, two carbs(two barrels), four heads, four valve covers, four exhaust manifolds, and dual exhaust. They were very heavy built engines, all the parts were extremely heavy. The intake and water pump were the only parts that were light. We had 8 of them in school systems bus and truck fleet, the buses had the 478 and trucks had a 305 or 351. They were 60 degree V block. They were a pain to put out, because they weighed more than a Big Block V8.

Truth is they really are a 500k engine, the 4 I was involved with were 450, ooo plus mile engines. I liked the inboard plugs, another cool thing is they had a oil bath that the cam ran in all the time, thats one secret of their long life. The cam lasted between 400 and 500k miles.
