Greetings from the City of Angels! I look forward to learning from the automotive enthusiasts on Grumpy’s Performance website. I am currently pulling out a 454 out of my Chevy Cheyenne 3/4 Ton, and considering rebuilding it for maximum towing capacity. Many have told me I am waisting my time with the old engine. However I was referred to this site in order to get data on building a towing motor.
Best Regards,

Want a Turbo 400, or 4L80E for towing .

Guys have said even with a 496 stroker An Allison Diesel trans like a 504 is too much...takes more input torque than can be had on 87 octane gas for it and tow respectable.

I was in Chicago earlier today.
Local 87 octane gas is $2.79 per gallon.

Chicago 87 octane I seen high as $3.54 per gallon.
Premium Shell 93 was $4.30 per gallon.

No way I would be using any engine for towing unless it was able to run on 87 octane gas all the time.

Something to look through.
Others, built 454 Tow Rigs on this forum.
Some reported only 6-7 miles per gallon.
Go broke towing in No time.

Diesels rule Towing.
Get the exact same MPG gallon loaded or unloaded.

496 8.1liter Vortech was pinnacle of BBC. Towing truck engines.
Read guys only get at best 10 mpg driving unloaded with a 4L80E trans.

Forgotten is the 427 Tall Deck BBC.
Still in Old Firetrucks and Farmers grain trucks. Pull 50,000 lbs way overloaded on 87 octane gas.
What they were built to do bone stock.
