Jack stopped by today and wanted me to take a look at his toyota 4x4 truck that needed a tune up, so we parked it to let it cool off and took my 1996 corvette to the local napa auto parts to get the parts he required, after we got back Jack remarked that the corvette was impressively fast, now keep in mind Jack drives a 6 cylinder toyota 4x4 thats fairly heavy and while its a decent truck its not going to win any serious races and my 1996 corvettes hardly fast, in-fact its almost stock, other than a recent tune-up and crane roller rockers and some very minor air filter changes., (its a low mid 13 second car)
but to Jack its fairly fast! this got me to thinking about all the cars Ive driven, and its was rarely the fastest ones that were the ones I liked, the most, my fastest personally owned car was a radically modified 1968 corvette that ran consistent 10.26-27 at about 135-136mph most of the time, but keep in mind back in the mid 1970s that was respectable and it kept me flat broke and fully involved. my most missed car was slower it ran at least a full 1/2 second slower on its best day, but it was a hell of a lot more fun to work on, and drive and I miss it far more , it was my 1965 lemans, with a 496 big block chevy engine that eventually got swapped into the corvette after several more modifications
this picture I found on the internet could be its twin

and I had cars that were never fast, but they were still fun to drive, like the 1967 firebird I had when I was dating

theres also something to be said for having a back seat and a truck at times

I hear Ya Grumpy.
Best to have 2 cars or toys or more.
One street use with mega torque & reliable without exotic race parts used extensive.

Then build the race car(s). Bound to cost more $ and more work to maintain.

i hear ya... if you can only have ONE car or truck.... a dead nuts reliable 12.50 car or 13.xx truck is the way to go. dont get too exotic and dont get too hung up on "the number"

in the past three or four years alot of "street" cars are fixated on making 4 digit horsepower. but a well thought out combination making 6-700 hp in a lighter car will outrun them every time and the only thing they can be proud of in the end is a dyno sheet, and likely a large credit card bill.

why i fell in love with the turbo L6 z cars was how well they hooked out of the hole and the "upside down" torque feeling you get as the power comes on harder and harder till redline. ive had more fun in slower datsuns than i probably ever will in a big expensive race car that shits the bed and needs a rebuild every couple seasons, or every season.

Its Accelerative Horsepower your feeling Phil.
Or what I called high speed torque.
Grumpy loves the 496 BBC but at 700+ HP its pretty radical for a daily driver in normally aspirated configuration.
The Hellcat is an unfortunate bench mark for us all now if wish to run against it on street or track.
Is it the fastest...No .
But its Lighting Fast & Reliable.
All have lots of work to do.
