Keeping A Transmission Supported With The Engine Removed

Greetings All: Kids close to pulling their SBC Engine
Tomorrow. Question: Is it necessary to support the trans
From underneath or is trans mount that’s there adequate to keep trans in place,
when unbolted from the Engine?
Reason asking is when Engine out, need to roll car around in shop.
Your thoughts on this greatly appreciated as always. Thanks again & Happy Easter.

when you need to pull the engine and can,t support the transmission, being left in the car,
while supported from a floor jack under the transmission,
because the car needs to be easy to move while the engines out,
most people lay a 6 ft 2x4 across the back of the engine bay,
with a folded towels under both ends of the boards to protect the paint,
on the upper rear of the front fender,s
then they tie a couple short ropes around the trans bell housing,
to keep in up and supported,
don,t tie rope through the bell housing mounting bolt holes,
or around the splined input shaft

as it makes remounting the engine a P.I.T.A.
and if supported by the spline shaft it might damage the trans,
Id strongly suggest at least two separate support ropes,
you don,t want a single loose knot or broken rope ,
to result in a fallen trans and damage as a result

yes there are commercial tools for that but if your doing it once a 6 -8 ft 2x4 and a couple of towels and rope works,
and yes the support from over the engine bay is usually preferred for several reasons

BTW if your looking for a low lift trans support and lift jack,

IVE used and like this one above, which I paid 1/2 the cost of with a friend and would recommend as a decent option

IVE used and own, and don,t like this one below, much thats one reason I went in on the friends jack purchase

IVE used the motor cycle lift as a trans jack in the past and Im seriously looking at purchasing one to use a a trans jack for the shop
