"Keyless" start

Da missus expressed an interesting mod: a push-button start/stop, rather than key-turn.

I'm thinking, what if she had a dongle on her keychain that the car could detect and only allow a push-button start if it detected it?

Have any ideas how we could accomplish that?

Yes - I was looking at that.

Hmmm, I wanted to rig something whereby all she needed to do was get in the car and push start. That'd be cool. Of course, hmmmm, how would I make it unlock on approach? Hmmmmmmm

Some sort of RFID - and then all you have to do to start it is open the door and press start. Hmmmm

It's RFID technology

I'll need to get some solenoids for the doors as well.

Hmmmm

Silly question. Are door solenoids fired: one impulse opens and a second closes?

Hmmmm, I'm a little confused here... can these things lock and unlock a car door - or do they simply pop it open? And the shaved handle is the lock by denial?

Duh!

EDIT - Aaaaah solenoid and actuators are two different things. DUH!

I couldn't resist. Since I have the door, dash, electricals etc in pieces, I decided to spring for the phantom key + actuators + we'll see how this goes...

This ought to be interesting !!

Does it look like you will have to do much more than just bolt it in? Maybe some drilling etc.

I have no clue what I am getting into - I don't even have the car in my driveway - so flying blind as a bat.

From what I remember after helping a few guys do the door locks on a couple chevelles and novas, the hard parts getting all the door panels and trim pieces to fit back and stay where they are designed to, its all to common to damage or find pieces don,t fit correctly once re-installed, most of those auto door lock solenoid kits come with instructions and installing the mechanics is generally not that difficult, you generally need a drill, an assortment of bits, and a assortment of pop-rivets, plus the common tools like needle nose pliers and screw drivers, and a decent pop rivet gun
