Recently my son and I started to do the body work on my 26. There is a need for some repair welding on the upper qrtr panels and inside edge of the fenders. Neither of us have ever done any welding.
I called a local welder who said he is not equipped to do light (wire) welding. The car has been disabled, to put it mildly, and cannot be driven anyplace. To move it would require putting it on a trailer that I do not own. The odds of getting someone here who can do it are not good but I still have to look into that.
My thought now is to buy an inexpensive welder, get some scrap metal, and learn how to do it myself. Since I know little to nothing about welding but otherwise am good with my hands what do y'all think?
I'm weighing the cost of a welding machine vs hiring a welder to drive way out here in the boonies and have him do a lot of playing while we figure out fenders. The fenders will need a strip shaped like a piece of pie welded on the inside edge to fit it to the body. This piece will maybe be 8" long at the most. The quarter panels have seperated from the body about 4" on each side and need only to be tacked.
To move the vehicle would require renting a trailer and taking it to various places in the hopes one would do the work I need done. This doesn't sound like a very good idea either.
I'm interested in doing what amounts to a grand total of 12" of welding. I don't need to remortgage the house to accomplish this.
Thanks in advance.
