I was asked if I was limited to owning
limited to only one\rifle what would I SELECT
WELL THATS VERY DEPRESSING ... BUT TO PLAY ALONG,
I GAVE IT SOME SERIOUS THOUGHT!

M1A™ SUPER MATCH .308 RIFLE – BLACK heavy match stainless synthetic
If you need a rifle your life may depend on, Id grab that every time!

a good second option

but ID really miss the rifle I have used for 4 plus decades
on most of my serious hunting trips. its a consistently accurate,
weatherby mark V stainless synthetic heavy match barrel in caliber 340- wby,
with a muzzle brake ,thats very similar to this picture, posted below,
the only reason the M1a1 gets the nod is you did not say that only rifle selected is only to be used for hunting
and if my family may be at risk , some day, I want a well known, really trusted,
and very familiar friend in my hands.

I don't know that I could give you an argument on your choice Grumpy I was going to say a real good AR 10 in 308 but I think your choice is better

yeah lots of readily available fairly common ammo is mandatory

btw I got asked what ammo, and accessories ID suggest,
be selected to be used in that M1A1 rifle for both hunting and defensive work?
Id want the speer 165 grain bullet in hand loads.
youll want a couple 5 cartridge magazines for hunting
either 41 grains of IMR-3031 or 45 grains of WW-748
used with a federal 215 primes works very well in a 308 rifle

frequent and regular, partial disassembly, a stiff tooth brush, proper solvents and a bore brush with patches,
and frequent use of MOLY spray lube helps rifle function and durability a great deal.
you'll want a dozen 20 cartridge magazines, for defensive use
and a few SPARE small internal springs and action parts, and a quality bi-pod

and a firing pin, and a cleaning kit seem rather reasonable to own
