just a heads up for guys planning to do this swap, I used the JCI kit and it was a complete waste of money. in reality all thats required is removing the L motor mounts from the pedestals, and mocking up two new plates upon which to mount the gm mounts. the jci kit is alot of money and excess work and if i knew then what i know now i never would have considered buying it. theres all kinds of superfluous labor and parts that come with that kit and that whole process. i just wish i knew more about fusing metal together back then, what a waste of time.

oh and you have to irreparably cut into the car to install the JCI kit for what was in retrospect no real reason.

you do know that we have a whole section on the site devoted to improving welding skills?
like Ive said before, learning to weld is a bit like having great SEX,
if you never did either activity, you might not see the point,
but after learning how and having experience at either activity and gaining the required experience and skills, you almost always wonder how you ever managed in life before without both before you acquired the experience and skills as they make life far more interesting!

hell yea, the entire concept was intimidating to me and the circles i moved in from about until about '07 or so, the idea of buying an expensive welder, the extra cost of electricity, how often am i really gonna use it? these were just bs scare tactics we used on ourselves just to justify not trying something new. now i make it a point, sometimes against my better judgement to get out of my comfort zone often, and look at problems from a perspective of someone who knows nothing about the internet.

entire bad ass gasser drag cars (my favorite nostalgia style) were built as frankenstein hacks of other vehicles, suspension and drivetrain wise at least, the cars ran great and were built during a time when people didnt know and didnt care to know that you should use this many degrees variance from stock pinion angle, or this motor and tranny wont fit in there. i feel like the internet is full of people whos unqualified and overwhelming willingness to tell a young hotrodder "no, you cant do that" is only outweighed by their own vehicles mediocrity.

when kids from the neighborhood pass by my place and check out my vette or my 280 and say they wanna have one someday, i tell them when they get it, to come over my house and ill help them make it fly. i dont plan on moving within the foreseeable future, and i do plan on making good on all those promises to those youngsters. if the kid wants a big block ford powered 280zx, who the heck am i to tell him no? ill tell him everything i know about the drive train and the chassis, and probably end up lubing the valve covers and stuffing one in there for him eventually, because thats just being a "good hero." NO or CANT used to be terminal words i was a kid, thats the end of the line of discussion, but when it comes to hotrodding nowadays when i hear NO or CANT i just say "challenge accepted."

thats why i genuinely love this forum grumpy, ive been reading your knowledge all over the internet for a long time and i dont recall you ever telling someone "no, thats stupid, just take your car to xxxx shop and drop gobs of money to have the same mediocre combination every else with your make/year/model has."

Its rarely if ever occurred to me that you "COULD NOT" install damn near any drive train in darn near any car if your willing to think thru the required modifications and are not all that concerned with maintaining brand loyalty and are not opposed to modifying or use of components that might not be all that commonly used!
In fact some of the projects that seemed the least likely to succeed proved over time to be rather interesting, and invariably resulted in my forced accumulation of new skills required to complete the job.
I remember some rather odd projects. like installing a 300 cubic inch inline ford 6 cylinder in a 1967 mustang simply because the owner blew up the original 6 cylinder and owned a truck that had a running 300 cid ford six in it we could use.
Or a 1968 383 road runner that thru a connecting rod that eventually got put back on the road with a 392 dodge hemi, and a totally rebuilt front suspension, that required major sheet metal surgery and a new K-frame.
and a 1965 JAG XKE that got a pontiac over head cam 6 cylinder and 4 speed from a doner wrecked lemans
or one of my first catastrophic builds where I helped a neighbor who installed a 377 sbc in a TR6 sports car.
and a few that worked far better than ever expected like installing a 496 bbc engine in a 1962 corvette, or the 496 bbc engine installed in my sorely missed 1965 lemans.
keep in mind you won,t always be just limited to drive train swaps, I modified my 1967 fire-bird to use mercury cougar sequential tail lights, and much brighter aftermarket head lights which I felt was a great improvement

i think sequential taillights are neat as heck... nowadays the new 2013 and up mustangs comes with them stock and they are hypnotizing to watch. im fascinated by that kinda stuff tho. theres a young kid (cant be older than 20) that comes to the street races in a buckety old jeep cherokkee who sells and installs LED lighting for turn signals, interior lights (vanity, dome light, even behind your gauges for a brighter display while retaining your dimmer switch! different colors if you prefer something besides stock) and he does most all jobs on the spot at the car hangout quick and cheap. hes always running around doing some sort of electrical stuff and i think its really cool that hes taking something he learned and applying it to cars.
