the FORD 9" has advantages and lots of aftermarket support, but Ive used a DANA 60 rear with its heavier axles and bearings and 9 3/4" gears in all my race cars , they are slightly heavier (about 60 lbs) but basically indestructable compared to the 8 7/8" 12 bolt chevy or 9" fords

17x11 and 17x9.5 wheels for 86 Corvette
Hello, I need some help from some of you that have installed 17x11 on the rear and 17x9.5 on the front of their 86 Corvette. The wheels I'm looking at have a 56mm offset on the front wheels and a 50mm offset on the rear. My old wheels are, of course, 16x8.5 all around with a 32mm offset. My question is can I install the 17x11's on the rear without changing any suspension components? I want the face of the wheels to sit at the same position as the old wheels... I know what offset is and, by my calculations, this wheel will sit too far out. Am I right?

accurately measuring tire clearance and wheel offset
https://www.journeysoffroad.com/wheeltire-sizing.html
https://www.1010tires.com/Tools/Tire-Size-Calculator (this is really handy)

theres several charts posted above in this thread that should be helpful, most of the better corvette shops and larger tire shops,
and performance wheel / tire sellers ,have been down this road dozens of times,
so they can give you valid info on what fits from past experiences, or you can obviously start measuring yourself,
be
well aware that the tire too wheel well clearances change, and the suspension geometry changes very noticeably,
with you or two people are siting in the car, during directional changes,"turns",
during braking and hard

acceleration. obviously if you currently have access to the wheels and tires,
you can try installing those components and
measuring clearances,
remember they sell
spacer plate adapters too move the wheel outward

If you want to buy and install larger than original wheels and tires on your car, you need the accurate measurements, so you won,t waste a great deal of time and cash,
Id also call tire rack, discount tire, etc. and other major on-line tire/wheel set vendors and ask questions (link below) they sell hundreds of corvette tires a month and would know by now what fits and what causes problems
it also helps if you accurately measure your current car wheel well , tires and wheel, and off set clearances internally in the cars wheel well, so youll know what your dealing with

buying tires on line can reduce the price significantly
,but be aware most local tire shops will charge you $25-$35 to install and balance EACH tire ,
you did not buy from them.
youll obviously need to know the correct size you need and it helps if you know the brand you prefer
youll also have to pay shipping charges and taxes in some cases, and of course deal with,
careless, clueless or stupid delivery services in some cases

Tire Rack is free shipping on tire orders over $50.

Tirebuyer is also free shipping if shipped to one of their dealers to install.

if youve had GOOD OR BAD experience buying tires for your performance car,
list the best sources,
or have found bargains or can list problems please post that related info
be aware, many aftermarket aluminum wheels can not use a standard tire mount machine,
so youll have a good deal of difficulty,
finding a shop to mount tires you did not buy from them and most people,
won,t be mounting tires manually with hand tools

solid fixture here in the forum
Mickey Thompson Street Comp Tires.
Bought last summer for my 1987 Corvette Convertible.
Factory 1990 ZR1 Wheels.
Rears 17x11.
Fronts 17x 9.5.

315s in back.
275s up front.

No wheel spacers used.
No issues.

Best street performance tire I have ever used.
Can drive 100 -120 in heavy rain.
No Hydroplane issues.

So far I think I am the only Corvette guy using Mickey Thompson Street Comps.
