.023-.025 has been my experience, as to the average piston to deck height on both small and big block Chevy when measuring the piston to deck height on un -machined blocks, now ill point out that piston pin heights and rod lengths tend to vary a few thousands so a longer rod matched to a shorter piston pin height can lower the average dimensional spread, and that blocks can vary so milling the deck and honing the mains tends to deduce the dimensional spread also, obviously the main bearing journals must be strait and the deck square and parallel to the crank center-line before you start assembling the engine

obviously you may want to measure components like piston pin height

notice how the longer crank stroke effects the piston stroke distance in the bore, both at the lower and upper end of the cylinder
