and from what I'm hearing, warranty work, and replacement parts for older ignition systems made by either is near non-existent

MSDP GROUP TO MERGE MALLORY WITH MSD

Mallory Ignition was Superior to MSD .

EVERY 5.0 RACER IN CHI TOWN FOUND THAT OUT.
ALL HAD MSD BOXES FAIL.

I am a Vertex Magneto Guy Grumpy.
Like You.

Crap shame.
Mallory dead now. Just a legacy name today.

holy shit... mallory made alot of things that no one else makes for decent pricing... i hope msd atleast continues the products under the msd name and doesnt do away with mallory stuff all together.

now let me ask you all this question... if msd and mallory merge.... who is left as competition? pertronix?

ELECTROMOTIVE Phil.
That's it.
Meant for High End Unlimited Budget Drag Racers.

yes I really like the simplicity of the vertex magneto ignitions, but the newer coil on plug ignitions with the individual computer controls for each individual cylinder do have a potential advantage in SOME applications

related
I really prefer either individual coil on plug ignitions with a crank trigger or a vertex magneto

As everyone is already aware, I do ignition system work. That said, DON'T PANIC, THIS IS NOT AN AD. This is only information, period.
https://www.summitracing.com/parts/msd-84661/overview/

It IS information on an issue that some, NOT ALL MSD 8466-1 magnetic pickups MIGHT have. This particular pickup is used in almost every small diameter billit, trigger, and some Ready to Run MSD and other manufacturer units.

These pickups use two wires to complete a signal to the processing unit, to sense and trigger the spark event. They a re fitted with two wires that connect into a single wire connector. The wires emitting from the pickup are basic black in color, with two different stringer colors to identify P and N sides of the pickup, as it is polarity sensitive.

These stringers are purple and orange. The connector is marked with the numbers 1 and 2. 1 fits the purple stringer wire, the number 2 fits the orange stringer. Reverse this sequence, and the timing WILL vary as much as 30 degrees, making the rotor firing end miss the terminal at the spark event. (Also, reversing the magnet under the pickup can cause the same timing anomaly).

The pickups in question are beginning to be available from lesser sources that vend on places as E-Bay, and other outlets that sell over stock and/or close out items. The country of manufacture for them reads on the package "Made in the U.S.A."

The issue with some of the pickups is, both wires emitting from the pickup are the basic black color, but, both sires have the orange stringer only, NO purple stringer.

These pickups are fully functional, no adverse issues, and should not be a problem, when the wires are connected to the correct terminals in the connector.

To identify the two wire stringers, look at the magnetic pickup coil where the wires emit. When the pickup is sitting as it is mounted in the distributor,:

The true orange wire is the TOP wire

The true purple wire is the LOWER, BOTTOM wire.

Connect as required, bottom / lower wire to connector terminal 1, top wire to connector terminal 2.

Further information on all MSD 8466-1 magnetic pickups: The magnet for this pickup is polarity sensitive, and MUST be installed correctly to phase the rotor correctly to interface with the wire terminals in the cap. On one end of the magnet, you will find a Marks-A-Lot marker line that was put there when the magnet was made and polarity tested, to identify that end fits towards the pickup coil, NOT out the open end of the pickup. IF the magnet is reversed, the rotor to cap terminal interface will be altered between 20 and 30 degrees, with adverse ignition performance the result.

Setting pickup gap: These magnetic pickups should NEVER be set using a metal feeler gauge, steel or brass, never. To set a pickup gap, measure out the gap you want using a caliper, or micrometer, and then, use some sort of plastic media. I have used the clear plastic coating that comes on cigarette packages, folded until I get the gap I want. Any plastic, cardboard, paper media will work.
