the other day my car just started to vibrate alot and my idel would go low. i thought it was my carb but when i took my distributor apart i saw that metal contact piont on the rotor was broken and mess up the cap. so i thought maybe thats what cause it but i replaced it and still nothing. i also check my plugs and they were all very black and had black powder, most on the driver side. i just dont know

you ALWAYS need to pull trouble codes ,and/or drop back to the basics of checking compression, verifying ignition timing, checking your fuel/air ratio, correctly adjusting valves, checking for vacuum leaks, verifying fuel flow and pressure, verify the battery voltage, spark plug wire resistance, check the plug gap, check the coolant and oil temperature, verify the exhaust is not restricted, etc, start with clean new plugs gaped at .045 thousands and use the VOM meter to verify the plug wires have LESS THAN 500 ohms resistance PER FOOT, pull each plug wire as the engine idles if its missing, to locate the cylinder that's not firing, pulling that plug wire has no effect on the idle, pulling good cylinder, wires has a noticeable effect, the CHEVY SHOP MANUAL is almost mandatory, and having a basic understanding of each of the cars systems sure helps!
and you'll need a CHEVY SHOP MANUAL, A VOM meter and a VACUUM GAUGE before trying to isolate and repair a problem with your car!
also look for loose or mis-aligned parts like flex plates, pulleys, accessories as that can indicate a problem

Ha...another '84 converted to a carb. No trouble codes here! You're on the right track. You have a tuning and/or carb. and/or timing issue. The car is shaking because the idle speed is too low due to the tune being off. Diagnose the problems like you would an old carbureted car.

well i tried tuning the carb and nothing happens. it still shakes alot. how would i know if its the timing?

step one,
verify TDC on the damper and timing tab are correct
step two
use a timing light and time the ignition per factory specs as a start point
actually reading thru the provided linked info won,t hurt either

well i mess with the timing and its still vibrating alot. also my exhaust smells really bad now. like it needs a tune up. but i replace everything.

the smell is an important clue!
Id suggest replacing or removing your catalitic converter as that smell frequently indicates a partly melted cat thats partly clogged, the retriction does not help engine performance, its usually the result of constant over rich fuel/air mix in the exhaust, If you were local Im sure we could diagnose and correct the problems in a logical order in a short time.

ok well i got my car back and what the guy said was it was way out of time so he tried to time it the best he can but cant because the timing chain needs to be replace. he also adjusted my carb and said my needles were way out. the other thing he replace was my detent cable becasue it was connected to my carb so he said that why i was having trouble taking off and it was skiping second gear so i have to get the transmission fixed:(. but whats i want to know is that he fix the vibration of the car but now it idles really low. like 6 rpms and it shuts off but he said it because its still not timmed right but i dont think that would cause it to turn off and idle really low. and the smell of the exhaust is still really strong. i just dont what to do. i just feel like selling it but cant  i will take a video of it tomorrow so maybe it helps more

first step is to verify the ignition timing, and replace the timing chain and ID sure verify the cats were in good condition,if they are restrictive get them replaced or removed.
test to see if the vibration in the engine or drive train, a loose flexplate, bad u-joint, defective damper, or a cylinder not firing correctly could easily be the source
you need to learn how to tune a carb, and read plugs, and time an engine, a little research on the site will provide the answers

ok thats helpful info. thanks!
so i going to start by replaceing my timing chain. what do i have to remove to make it easy so i do a good job and what are some things i have to do and not do?
