I have a 10 bolt that i am sure has never been serviced. It is out of a 84 c10. When I go from drive to reverse it "clunks" and the same from reverse to drive. It also leaks from the front of housing where the pinion is at. Is this something I need a total rebuild for? Or is it something I can get in there and tighten up and get a few more years out of? Any links to rebuilding, parts , or tightening it up would be appreciated. It looks like it would cost me a grand for a complete rebuild and about half that if I do it myself.

Just something to think about, the goal here,
is not necessarily to repair the existing,
damaged or defective component,
its to have a fully functional rear differential,
thats as good as new or better.
before you assume the rear differential is damaged,
I'd suggest replacing the u-joints, the clunking sounds,
might not be inside the differential, itself internally.
(I'd also suggest replacing the differential fluid ,
after draining the oild fluid and replacing the pinion,
and axle seals, and differential cover gasket ,
and it certainly would not hurt to add a ceramic magnet,
to collect micro, metallic trash)

I recently had a local guy bust the pinion gear on his 10 bolt rear in a 1967 pontiac firebird,
he got estimates on the replacement parts,
and machine work required to rebuild it
that to his surprize totalled over $800, and once we got into the dis-assembly process, and inspection,
Im sure it would have eventually been even higher,
I called a local salvage yard , and they had a parts location service,
he found a replacement used rear differential locally,
at a different salvage yard we picked up for under $300,
if we could have found one in that salvage yard ,
and pulled it ourselves it would have cost under $150.
most salvage yards have a parts location and inventory,
service that links info allowing you to find parts
