New Amc Guy

303E85EE-5349-4EEB-A139-F3F2DB20B71C.jpeg Greeting from Michigan, Home of rusty cars and pot holes.

Numerous searches about carburetors and carb spacers have led me to this site.

Lots of good information and not a lot of pissing matches over who’s opinion is right made me want to join.

My car is 1974 Javelin with a 401 and 727 trans. It’s a fun car to drive but a challenge to find parts. I’ve had the car since 93 but time and money were always hard to find until the last two years.

welcome too the web site, please post a few pictures of your car and projects,
and yes... money is almost always a problem for most of us.
I always regretted the demise of AMC, I liked the JAVELIN and especially the AMX
theres several nice AMX cars in the west palm beach area, Id love too own one If the price was reasonable

Welcome to the forum from Oklahoma !

My wife is from Benton Harbor/St Joe Michigan area, but we met in Houston.

Welcome Mellow. Call Desert Valley auto parts for AMC parts. A friend just bought a center console for a early AMX and priced out many parts he may or may not decide to get.

I have a lot of family in Battle Creek, Kellogg and rich old aunt living in a cabin in Marquette

An AMC... awesome !!!! We def need more of those. Pleased to see one. Welcome to the board.

So I took the Javelin to the track and ran a best of 12.69 at 107 mph and I’m thinking the car needs more then the 3.55 gear she has right now.

Respectable times.
Gear change may help yes.
Looking at the cam profile, heads you have at what they actually flow, more importantly to me is Exhaust to intake flow ratio present, Exhaust system, Headers, induction system, tradeoffs present in choices, ect. need to be looked at.

The AMC AMX. Javelin 12-bolt I recall is fairly stout.
But has its Race limits I do recall.
A popular swap in the past was a Mopar 8-3/4" 12-bolt diff.
Ford 9.

Dana 60 could be used.
Pontiac Olds 9.3 diff.

Many AMC rear diffs were destroyed drag racing.
Saving for restoration value is what I am thinking.
Use another type of proven bullet proof rear diff for drag race.

Rearend is Mopar 8 3/4 that the previous owner put in the car with 3.55 gears and a 28-inch tire, I'm going thru the traps around 4,800 at 107 mph.
The engine is a .030 401 with forged pistons and a solid lifter cam. The single plane intake is a torker and the cam is matched to the intake. 3.500 to 6,500
I shift around 6,500 rpm and the trans is a 727 with a manual valve body and a 10-inch converter that flashes at 4,000 when I leave the line.

My 60 foot after 3 passes is 1.76 to a 1.77 The rearend has an adjustable pinion snubber set about 1 inch from the floor and the rear springs have a double main leaf on both sides. I ran these numbers thru a 3 inch custom exhaust with an X pipe and hooker 1 7/8 long tube headers.

The carb is a Holley 830 cfm hp series carb with mechanical secondaries and annular boosters.

OK.

A 727 Torqueflite is a Nice Mopar Transmission.
Excellent gear spread for Drag Racing.
I would step up to a 3.90, 4.10, or a 4.30 gear.

3.90 gear will be streetable. 70+ mph cruise speeds can be done with a Hot Solid lifter cam like you state you have.

4.10 slower highway driving speeds can be done.. like 55-60 steady.

4.30 gear slower steady highway speeds like 50-55 mph.

It means cruising 20 -200 miles non stop for gas or a pee break.

4.30 gear for max effort 1/4 mile ET.

4.56 gear for Heroics....Need 7K RPM typical.

Something may be holding your car back from Higher MPH Trap speeds.
Like the exhaust system.

Get a chance find the camshaft cam card & cam grind part number.
Static compression ratio your at.

Dial in closer to what helps.

Agreed on the exhaust, I drove the car to the track previously and I'm thinking about renting a trailer next season.
Dropping the exhaust and putting some collector extensions on the car.

I can swap out the center section in about 3 hour's so my plan is to build a spare 489 center section just for the track.

I'm on the fence between the 4.30 and a 4.56 I'm thinking if the 4.56 is too much I have enough room for a 29 inch tire but if the 4.30 isn't enough to try a smaller tire.

The cars heavy with a full interior and a working heater.

It's 9.85 compression engine but could be closer to 10IMG_8653.JPG

Nice Looking.

With static compression down low for a solid lifter cam single plane engine I would use as a Torque Engine.
Not set in stone but no Cam Card or Exact Cam Specs are known.

4.10 or 4.30 best choices today.

7K RPM with 4.56 need real good parts to be safe.

Need 112 -140 mph trap speeds to bring up bragging rights.

Something seems to be holding back at 107.

Sometimes a Gear change unleashes more MPH..

I’m also thinking about buying the Edelbrock Amc Aluminum heads which have are 52 cc’s and would give me a nice bump in compression and take some weight off the nose of the car.

Thanks for the advice

Shawn
