Ive had a couple neighbors with similar requests,
the first thing Id suggest is don,t buy anything until you get some hands on training and time at a range.
I generally suggest they sign up for and take your states hunter safety test and pass it,
in most states its free and or low cost,
and don,t take the online course,
take the hands on classes that are generally available about once a month,
as they generally let you shoot a shotgun and school you in firearm safety.
as a starting point, as it provides both a bit of knowledge and once passed,
provides you with an easier route to obtaining a concealed carry license should you ever decide thats the route you might want to go.
you need hands on experience with pistols , and shotguns before you make a purchase.
and just a tip, I was a firearms instructor for a few years at a local gun shop where we ran a weekly class for new security guards ,
I can certainly attest to the fact that most people new to pistol craft can,t hit #$%%^
until they get instruction and some practice
most new applicants could not consistently hit a full body silhouette anyplace,
at 10 yards more than 2 out of 6 shots,
and thats under no stress on a stationary paper target in semi decent lighting and with at least some introductory instruction.
personally Id suggest a
Ruger GP100 357 mag 6 Inch Stainless Model
if your dead set on a handgun,
as it requires minimal training and maintenance
as revolvers are easy to operate, clean and maintain, load and unload safely.

Id suggest 9mm for a first pistol
personally, a 12 ga shotgun is in my mind the most practical and lethal home defensive weapon.
you don,t need the latest tactical gun,
a plain jane 12 ga with an 18"-20" barrel and a 6-7 shot capacity with sights is all thats required
