Well, as part of my winter work, I changed the oil and canister filter and when I tried to start it I heard oil pouring on the floor. Canister was leaking like crazy. So I removed canister, checked the gasket, reinstalled it and same leak. Actually it POURED down the side of the canister is a better description.
I removed it again and this time I got looking closely and I found a pin hole on the machined horizontal sealing surface. You can see it in the photo near the clutch adjustment rod. The hole seems to run diagonally back towards the center of the filter as you can see a second hole slightly to the left. If you can zoom in on the picture there is also a very very small crack there as well that runs from hole to hole.
When the canister is installed, the square edge canister gasket isn't wide enough to seal this hole and oil has a direct route to leak outside the canister.
I have absolutely no idea how this hole came to be there. It wasn't leaking when I parked it for winter and it wasn't leaking when I warmed the engine to change the oil. And I know I didn't create this hole when I changed the oil so it must be a casting defect that has all of the sudden popped up after 50 yrs.???
Anyhow, looking for some ideas on how to repair it without further damage.
I like to keep it original, but I would go to a spin-on filter adapter if that's what it takes. I definitely don't want to lose the original block from a bad repair or loss of oil.

SOME OF THE YOUNGER GUYS MAY HAVE NEVER SEEN THE ORIGINAL CHEVY OIL FILTER DESIGN
ID try de-greasing the area with carb or throttle body cleaner , followed by an acetone soaked rag,then applying ,or using a bit of J&B weld to fill the pin hole and carefully cleaning the seal area clean then adding a NEW SEAL TO THE CANISTER or swapping to a spin on filter adapter and be aware that the ADAPTER FOR THE 1957-68 IS DIFFERENT FROM THE 1968-through 1991 adapter
