SHORTBUS posted this tip

"The tip to remove the Opti cover so as to be able to rotate the rotor to rotate the opti shaft is key. You can remove the cover without disconnecting the plug wires. This was important to me because I was operating in mortal fear that I would get the plug wires crossed. The GM service manual has a nice set of drawings ID'ing the plug wire configuration but its so hard to trace the wires back to the actual plugs given how tight the engine compartment is.

The procedure is to snuggle the Opti, with cover removed, gently against the front of the motor. Then turn the rotor slowly. You will feel each spline "hang up" slightly as it meshes with the splines in the camshaft. BUT, when you push the opti a little towards the timing cover, it won't go easily. ONLY when the correct spline mesh (ie, the squared off spline into the squared off spline in the cam) exists will the opti slide right on. So, engage the splines gently and give it a little nudge. If it doesn't go on, thats not the right spline. Turn slightly till you feel the next spline hit and try again. And so on until one of the spline engagements ALSO allows you to push the opti against the timing cover with virtually no resistance.

Reinstall the cover, put everything back on the front of the motor and thats it. Once you've done it once (or 5x) its really not a big deal"
