there is and always will be...a very remote chance, that you'll wake up some night to the sound of the house burglar/security alarm,
or you see something about to happen on the outside surveillance cameras, and motion sensors or the sound of breaking glass or a kicked in door frame, most of us will grab a 12 ga or a hand gun, to confront the home invasion rather than just becoming dead victims, but if your forced into a lethal confrontation, you can seriously improve your odds of survival, by the use of proper prior planning, and use of advantageous equipment, obviously having a bullet resistant vest and the proper weapons give you an advantage over being totally unprepared
keep in mind you'll want / need both a carrier vest,
and the protective plates that fit in the vest pockets,
that provide most of the bullet resistant properties,

the cost may seem high but its penny's,
compared to a hospital stay or being crippled for life or dead

if your going to invest in decent body armor its not cheap, you'll want level IV and both front and back plates and maybe side and crotch plates in my opinion, and its fairly heavy,
not something you put on instantly, but with practice it can be done rather quickly and it may give you a sense of added security, you can keep it under or behind the bed, and with practice it can be slipped on in 15-20 seconds, it won,t make you invulnerable but it gives you a distinct edge in surviving if bullets start flying

I like the thought Mr Grumpy, but I will stick with my Crye Precision JPC lightweight plate carrier in multicam. I want the bad guy to see it and perhaps make him think twice about his intentions and what's behind the gun pointed at him. Crye is military grade, expensive, but I trust my life with gear provided to me in another life and our soldiers. Crye makes the plates, hard and soft, side plates hard and soft. The JPC is very easy to put on once adjusted properly and easy doff.

The only plates I trust my life with are Crye or Hesco. Yes they are expensive, but how much is my life worth? Also, you have a great shop, that I use all the time for my gun gear and stuff.

WHY???

It's what I know I guess, I have no other reason than that. Sorta like oil, I trust SWEPCO oil, it has always performed for me. There are tons of race oil, one is as good as the other, or not.

To be clear, there is nothing wrong with other plates, or carriers, since they have gone thru NIJ standards/testing etc.

just a quick story

one of the guys I used to hang out with was an officer, in charge of a miami swat team, one of his duty's was to test and recommend equipment choices that would be purchased by the department, as that testing and recommendation, of equipment was one of his functions he contacted manufactures' and larger equipment vendors
for samples to test.
he would spend 5-6 months doing range testing and wearing vests for a week in the car, to check how the vest felt and functions,
I was close friends, with him and he was frequently very frustrated, because he would narrow the choices on something like bullet resistant vests
down to lets say 3 top choices, all of which proved very effective at stopping bullets in extensive testing, yet out of maybe 30 vendors offerings ,many were clearly inferior quality and he would point out, in long very detailed reports showing the test results with pictures etc.
that info was very detailed, lets say vendor (A) would throw in bullet resistant hip and shoulder pads for free if the department purchased 1000 plus vests at lets say $500 while vendor (B) might offer a similar vest at $478 if the department purchased 1000 plus vests, but had no options at any price for the added protective panels, and vendor (C) would throw in leather belts and very effective sweat cooling, under vest shirts, with the vests for lets say $489.
he usually found that the most expensive equipment was not always the best value, and a vest that might sell fo $800 might not be as good as a $600 vest, and a $500 vest might be the best available.
the department bean counters would inevitably select a provenly inferior vest that did not come close to providing decent protection, because it sold for $299 each
he would point out the test data and be told , look the vendo says its a level three vest just like the others, so your months of testing must be flawed, as the ratings say the vests are comparable.
he would then ask if he could make the test data available and allow officers to buy their own vests if they wanted too, and maybe they could get a voucher for 50% of the cost?
that was always laughed at! (nope! we want standardization,)
we don't want officers thinking that some guys have much better equipment than others, and we won't allow , non standard equipment, because, if we provide vouchers , some guys will undoubtedly would buy a $200 vest and swear they paid $700, and we will be responsible for their medical bills

That doesn't surprise me one bit, your story is repeated across the nation for all types of purchasing decisions.
The accountants have way too much power, yet NEVER have to actually use the products.
When our idiots running the government, in particular, "Pres. Bill Clinton signed the United States-China Relations Act in 2000, granting permanent normal trade relations with China and removing the previous stipulation that required annual reviews of the country's trade status. The act also helped China enter the World Trade Organization". The Chinese products/production crushed normal thinking and price became the absolute in purchasing decisions no matter the cost to US Jobs or Manufacturing. Inferior products became normalized, yet nothing stopped them from making those decisions. It was all about making net profits. Just go look at Walmart's market capitalization back in 2000 and look at it now.
Why do you think our Military has so many problems with line gear. The people making decisions to buy NEVER have to wear, use, repair, train with the gear. Although, at least they do test and the military has high standards, but in many cases it comes down to cost per unit and other contracts for different products influence decisions as well. The military has one of the best purchasing systems in the world, yet it also is political in many cases, influencing drivers of cost run purchasing decisions.

Lowest bidder gets the contract that is supposed to protect your life.
Never made sense to me.
Buy Foreign vehicles to use for the US safety and transportation.

this has to be a scam, notice there's no claimed bullet resistant rating at all.
