If your ordering FORGED PISTONS from the larger custom manufacturers Theres usually optional machine work or parts on pistons that are not bargain basement, cast or hypereutectic pistons / re-builder designs, always call and ask, about options, because some manufacturers will include standard or tapered tool steel piston pins at slightly higher prices than the standard pins IF they include any at all, some will machine the pistons for dual snap ring or buttons at slight extra cost, and once you get into custom pistons theres even more options
the ring spacing and groove diam, and depth and width are not absolutely fixed, the pin diam. and location are seldom locked firm if your dealing with a custom piston, there are options
here is where you, or your machine shop can screw things up on ring to bore seal, you need to have the cylinders bored and honed to the correct size specified by the manufacturer of the pistons, after MEASURING THE PISTONS to verify their size per the piston manufacturers instructions, then gap the rings per the ring manufacturers instructions, when you hone the bores, get and use block deck hone plates, during the hone process , keep in kind you want to use the same (STUDS OR BOLTS) the machine shop used and the same torque settings they used when the cylinders were honed with deck plates or the distortion of the bore and ring seal won,t be identical (exactly round)or ideal, keep in mind the piston side clearance must match what the piston manufacturer states.

heres an add for less expensive pistons from a well known vendor, from JEGS, at times whats not being mentioned is just as important as whats being pointed out in the advertizing
if you look at the prices these look like a really good deal and for a stock rebuild they probably are!

http://www.jegs.com/p/Sealed-Power/Spee ... 2/10002/-1

notice they never mention if the pistons are basic cast, hypereutectic or forged, alloy and at the listed prices Id bet serious money they are not 4032 or 2618 forged
Most aftermarket pistons use the 2618 alloy (low silicone alloy <1%). this alloy has a higher overall strength and can ultimately take a bit more abuse, but you have to run higher piston-to-wall clearances...usually .0035" to .0045" minimum, (ALWAYS VERIFY WITH THE MANUFACTURER BEFORE INSTALLING)

the 4032 alloy has a higher silcone content which allows for less piston expansion...hence you can run tighter wall clearances. more like .003 - .0035." MINIMUM (ALWAYS VERIFY WITH THE MANUFACTURER BEFORE INSTALLING)
