Pontiac Crate motors - comments?

I haven't heard of them Rich.
Back in the Pontiac Loop again.
New names all around.
Grumpy & Me can help you build big power.
Some Pontiac engine builds can exceed $80 k.
Race only.

Ive never heard of that builder either, and the prices listed look HIGH!
ESPECIALLY for a "PRE RUN ENGINE"
(I"M ASSUMING THAT MEANT MOSTLY USED COMPONENTS AND PARTLY REFURBISHED and REBUILT")
but I'm going to look thru my notes and see what Ive built in the past that worked rather well, and if youll post your cars weight, trans, rear gearing and budget, and it would be rather useful to know the clearance from the block rail to the under hood so a valid intake can be suggested.
Im sure we can suggest a really effective valid combo and parts list., and maybe go further.

You don't need 900 HP in a 428 Pontiac to run fast Rich on rhe street.
As you found out on your recent 1965 GTO Test drive......
The torque of a 389 is impressive.
Once you exceed 550 Hp, it becomes a Maintence Love affair.
Stock production block should be HARD BLOCKED 1/2 Way.
Strengthen cylinder walls.
Tends to run on warm side street driving on a hot day.

Won't coolers help that out?

I'm so used to driving 12 second or faster Corvettes for years ('05 Convertible and '06 Z06) I want to feel something better when those gas pedal spasms start

Then the GTO Will need a Rollcage.
You already got kicked out of English Town with a Stock C6 Slow car.
Roll bars strengthen the Ladder on frame factory chassis tremendous.

I'll have to find those specs from a stock 65 GTO for you - no car as of today. I'm actually biting my lip as we speak. The guy who bought my last vette just emailed me to say he's got a trade for my 06 truck - (Reading this email at the same time writing here) a one owner, 1966 GTO tri-carb 389 4 spd. original paperwork invoice and Protect O plate. Down side: Rusted out floor pans throughout - trunk is rusted gone. But, doors and quarters are rust free. It's that really pale yellow, black vinyl top and mustard brown color interior - YUCK! I have to pass.

Then I'll have to go when the track gets rented for some time on the weekend by the Corvette club or just do one pass and hope it's good enough to frame the pass receipt or sneak back in at the season's close. I have roll bars on my Jeep and that's enough for me.

Your in PONTIAC ZONE NOW Rich.
No Chevy Vette Guy will give you the time of day.
Just Grumpy & Me.
Kinda like OUTLAWS.
Bandits.

3400 Lbs dry wieght for a 1965 GTO Grumpy.
3200 lbs for a 1964 GTO.
By 1970 The GTO with A/C tipped scales at 4,000 lbs.

That's fine by me, I'm done with Corvettes. They run the models too dam long until you're sick of seeing the same old thing. I loved the days when cars changed year to year like the Chevy Impalas. Throughout the 60s and the first few years in the 70s, Mopars, Buicks, Pontiacs, Oldsmobles and oh well, I might as well give them credit too, the Fords, all had you wondering what's the new car going to look like. C3s to C6s ran too dam long in my opinion and I don't know how C3s survived and even made record sales from the mid 70s to 1982! 1975 - 165 hp and a record year for sales to that date? Hell, for 7 yrs. GM couldn't be bothered to get the bodies straight enough to paint any 'vette in Black! It must be just pure customer loyalty like those years HD was AMF. Foreign bikes could wipe the asses with Harleys and their rollercoaster quality control, but Americans can make anything happen if you just click your heals 3 times. (my rant for today)

America built plenty of Shitboxes I recall Rich.
Every Asshole Chevy Front wheel drive douche bag.
Gremlin.
Pacer.
Pinto.

I like Harleys.
A Shovel Head Stroked to 110 & Race Cammed will blow the Doors off of Yagasacki Fuck You.

I'm a Pontiac guy from the mid 60's on, I'm just glad someone else is in the game and keeping them alive.

Ive built enough Pontiac engines to know their strong and weak features and no mater what anyone thinks, theres a few facts that need to be known.
the lack of commonly available decent flow numbers from factory heads, in salvage yards , and very few 4 bolt blocks, the fact that many aftermarket parts suppliers ignore Pontiac, limited choices in selecting many components.
almost zero available factory forged cranks, and the fact the factory engines are no longer in production, and Pontiac CORP. is out of business, makes this engine less attractive to most engine builders.
and the fact almost 90% of the factory OEM connecting rods are crap,
and subject to failing if pushed to over 4200 fpm on a regular basis, makes them less than ideal in my opinion.
yes if you have deep pockets theirs aftermarket parts that solve these issues but its not cheap.
now you can certainly build a performance engine with Pontiac
architecture but component cost and ease of component availability will tend to make it more difficult that working with the more popular Chevy, ford and dodge engines

FLOOR PANS , most INTERIORS and PAINT ARE EASILY REPLACED
