Preparing for my next race...

Hey all,

I was not sure where to post this as it doesn't fit in any particular area. It's isn't supercharge; it isn't wiring; it isn't water/meth injection; it isn't trans related. It is all of the above. It's a blog documenting my peripecies as I prepare for my next race... That's IT! Shouldn't we have a racing area? Where we blog as we prep for races?

Since the last race, a few issues have cropped up: the steering wheel won't lock and I cannot get my key out of the ignition ;) , after a while in heavy traffic I get close to overheating, and very rich at WOT.

I replaced the exhaust gasket with one that is more restrictive, but at least it SHUTS UP! The gasket better fits the headers rather than the heads.

The rich at WOT is off to me as I tuned this on a dyno last year. The only thing that changed was the rotating assy that has deeper piston dishes. That and the centrifugal blower might be slipping. In anycase, I need to replace the belt as it lost 4 of its 12 ribs rubbing against the powersteering pulley. I eed to move the PS pulley out of the way somehow before replacing the belt - then I'll put in an adjust-a-jet secondary plate on the carb.

The near overheating, that I experienced this morning going to work, occurs after about an hour of slow stop and go traffic. The secondary puller eletric fan (18 amps) shuts down! My guess: it is the automatic circuit breaker. The primary fan (near 40 amps if I recall correctly), a pusher, is a heavy duty unit from a Ford truck. It works GREAT! I think the water pump might be getting old as well... moving from stationary to 20 mph (1500 rpm) and the temp drops from <200 to 185. The secondary fan might be a bit of a cheapo.

As for the rest...

To kick off, here are the things I need to do over the year as I prep for the next race:
A = short term, B = medium term, C = long term.

A- Replace my 1-inch master cylinder with a 15/16* (I need to stop!)
C - Take it to a dyno and tune
A - Install the blow off valve.
A - fix steering wheel lock
A - Reconnect the wiring for my electric trans temp and trans pressure gauges
B - Ensure water/meth injection circuit is operating smoothly + underhood LED works
A - Replace cabin dome light and cover ;)
B - Put healights on relays
A - Raise rev limit
C - Rebuild rear end. Details TBD
C - Get it to hook
A - Get knock sensor back on line
A - Get the under hood idiot light running again: temp/fans + line lock + water meth LED
A - Get TCC circuit running again
A - Get onboard A/F gauge running again
B - Get that adjust-a-jet plate and basic tune with my dual wide-band O2 sensor
B - Get a keyless lock ;)
A - Get gauge lights working
A - Find rattle at hot idle (water pump?)
C - Get cheapo race rims
B - Get body shop to attend to some rust issues.
A - Get that @#$%@# relay center stuck to the dash... the velcro keeps coming off and making a sticky mess on the dash.

As you see a lot of As but many of them small jobs.

* Currently emergency stop only works when the pads are hot and after a series of hard stops. Then they work well. Otherwise, it can get kinda scary. Cold, standing on the pedal will not lock the front wheels. The calipers are twin-piston SSBs.

As you can see, I really went out on a limb when going to the race. I just slapped the motor in the and DROVE!!! ;)

I'll blog here + pics but will likely have more specific questions in relevant sections.

Your in performance,

D.

- 15/16 Master Cylinder is on there: BIG difference!

- Unexpected job: hiding everytihing electronic under the dash

- New job: redo all the vacuum lines.

- Discarded adjust-a-jet idea

- blow off valve installed... but not sure it is big enough.
- Knock sensor is up an running.
- Steering wheel lock fixed
- Reconnect the wiring for my electric trans temp and trans pressure gauges... but the pressure gauge still gives really weir readings.
- Rev limit raised
- Body shop is penciled in for mid-Feb
- Rattle is the supercharger at idle...

- New TCC circuit arrived

- Busted O2 sensor... new one is on order
- Dome light is on order
- Dual Derale electric fans on order.

- Also found a valve noise (exhaust two?) that I tried work out by setting hot lash but it won't fade.

Blow off valve, is that to limit maximum boost pressure?

I need to start paying attention to such info, what do you think is the problem?

- Rev limit raised
From what to what RPM?

- Body shop is penciled in for mid-Feb
- Rattle is the supercharger at idle...
Looks like this must be a priority, don't want it to destroy it's self. Are you worried about the problem ?

Maybe this is your biggest priority!

- Dual Derale electric fans on order.
You don't go just half-way do you?

- Also found a valve noise (exhaust two?) that I tried work out by setting hot lash but it won't fade.
Is it the usual ticking noise or something different?

The supercharger was "fluttering" under sudden deceleration. At high rpm if you get off the gas compressed air piles up on top of the throttle blades and makes an uncomfortable fanning sound. Tho NewEraRacecraft says not to be concerned about it... I just don't like it. I think the accurate term is a bypass valve.

I think the sensor is not matched up to the electric gauge - different PSI spread and voltage... maybe the gauge is broken? The sensor is new.

5500 to 6100

I was and still am worried about it. According to NewEraRacecraft, at idle this can happen. It relates to the lash of the gearing. I am keeping an eye on it.

Well, I have been without that @#$%@# dome for 6 years? ;)

- Dual Derale electric fans on order.

I had to electric fans on there already on HD puller from a truck - 40 amp. And the other is a Zirgo 10 amp pusher. I am not happy with the Zirgo. Plus I'd rather have side by side puller - my guess is that will be more efficient.

- Also found a valve noise (exhaust two?) that I tried work out by setting hot lash but it won't fade.

It sounds like the usual valve tick. Could be anything. Sounds definitely valve related.

- TCC circuit is the wrong one (my bad)
- Dual Derale electric fans arrived
- Sealed off leaks in exhaust.

Do you run a high amp alternator/generator?
With elec fuel and water pump + electric fan my stock 10si is too weak(low voltage at idle).
Changed that for a 140 Amps unit from tuff stuff on mine :D

Powermaster 140 Amp... oh, yes!!!!!
Yeah this was my second choiche for a generator. they make really great starter for the sbc.
I went with tuff stuff because, apparently they are as good as the powermaster but a little cheaper(i dont know since i did not check price) both unit are great.

Had problem with my stock 10si, hard starting, had to rev past 1500 rpm to get the voltage up to 12-13 volt(and that was with fan off.) :/. It was driveable in the street :)

Ordered a pair of "drag bags" as well. Less for performance than to fix a slightly saggy rear... the car, not my butt.

Add that to the to-do list

Drag bags and a few other goodies arrived... to include the new left caliper. Well done Summit!!!!

I am more or less over the pharyngitis. Might install the narrow O2 sensor tonight... just cuz I like it

New cap and rotor got here. Last week I had an ignition failure - spark was badly scattering then suddenly zip! Turns out the center post of the cap was gone. Probably because I had only noticed after a while that the cap had not been securely fastened down for a few drives...

Installed some airlift drag bags... Mainly for level and drive comfort. Makes a real pleasant difference. I think my rear coils were tired. Also improves the stance... Should take a pic of that. Corners much better.

Again, much firmer smoot ride and comers much better.
