Progressive rate coil springs

"One test is worth a thousand expert opinions."
There is no suspension category, so I posted here.
Would I be correct in assuming that progressive rate coil springs would not be a good choice for straight line performance, hooking- street racing? Car is 84 Firebird Trans Am with stock original rear coil springs.
I'm not interested in corner carving, but the car will remain 100% street driven and I do not want to make the suspension drag race only and have the car slide into the ditches while trying to make a turn.
I do already have 3 way adjustable drag shocks on the rear. http://www.shopcompetitionengineering.com/ceb/catalog/navigationPath//2::Competition Engineering/93300::Shocks/9345::Rear Shocks/{25397}::Rear Drag Shock, 3 Way Adj..html?entryId=catalog.productgroup.2933009345&expand=true&menuId=main.menu
The front struts are also Competition Engineering, or maybe KYB, but are not drag race or adjustable.

your cars rate of acceleration, is mostly dependent on the suspension's ability to transfer the engines torque through the drive train to the suspension to the tires and get the tires to grip the pavement and the cars, power to weight ratio, and the rate of efficiency that the cars suspension has to transfer that power to the tires.
from my experience Id suggest that your car generally requires frame connectors and a minimal roll cage to allow good traction if your engine produces over about 450 hp/450 tq simply because the body will flex noticeably if you do get decent traction. the third gen cars are rather well known for being rather flexible.
this absorbs energy and reduces the cars ability to transfer its power to the pavement.

your basically dealing with a third gen camaro/firebird tires and brakes are rather major factors in how the car handles.
the shocks and springs on the front are less important to the cars acceleration than,
a stiff solid frame and dependable and predictable rear suspension and good tires and brakes.
adjustable air shock can go a long way there!

As Grumpy mentioned the basics of frame connectors and optimizing the rear suspension with aftermarket bushings, trailing arms, Panhard etc. I'd also check in with the guys on thirdgen.org for specifics.

ThirdGen, like many other internet forums, has more opinions, rather than facts. I'm not saying that
good info is not there, it's just buried in tons of opinions. You have to read for hours and days and weeks
just to extract out the good info. And most importantly, you have to know the difference.

Thanks Grumpy, I will be reading ALL of the links. Air shocks??? Really??? Do you mean air bags in the rear coil springs?

I already have those exact Lakewood traction bars installed (it's nice to see I did something right), also bolt-in tubular frame connectors.
They can be welded, if necessary.

As far as I know, there are no front shock tower braces that will fit with the dual snorkel air cleaner setup, which I plan on using.
But the one you referenced says it works with a carb. I will have to look into that more. I hope it does fit, because I was planning on fabricating one.

The springs I was asking about were the rears.
