Rebuilding A Doug Nash 4+1 Street 5 Speed

Still thinking about the Tremec....

Well, here's my other choices, I have a cherry Muncie M21 I can use, but think it is the course spline on the input side, so would have to change out the clutch plates! McLeod dual disk, not cheap! And a longer driveshaft, also not cheap!

And as I've had both Muncies and my DN apart, the DN seems way more stout, so I'm afraid I would probably rip it up even faster than I'm trashing my DN !!

I've got a bunch of third members, and a bunch of R&P's from 3.0 to 4.56. Most of the center sections are not 35 spline though, which is what the gasser axles are. Two are, both Detriot Lockers, have one fitted with 3.50 and one with 4.56. Could change either one to other ratios. The 3.50 is in the rear presently.

Also have a TH400 that was built up for a Buick 455 race car, could find a flex plate for the blown Olds and bolt that up, but again probably a different length driveshaft.

On Maui a Lenco would be an exotic piece, and probably even fun to drive once I got used to it, but would miss the downshifting capabilities, even the Turbo 400 downshifts pretty nicely if you blip the throttle just right on downshifting!!

Am traveling in OR and WA at the moment, visiting family, so have time to ponder these deep, deep earthshaking thoughts.....

Aloha,
Willy

You could purchase a Brand New Made in Italy M21 fine spline input shaft.
Then purchase a 35-spline Race Spool.
Cash outlay about $375-$450. Depending what brand spool bought.
Muncie is tougher than the DN5.

A fine spline input shaft for the M21, now there's a thought....

I have a 35 spline spool, had it in for a bit, was flat towing it and on a steep downhill right turn the 55 wanted to go straight and jackknifed me, at 5 mph! Put the Detroit Locker back in!
Am used to the Lockers, the are a bit erratic but they lock up quite nicely for me. And I can drive on the street just fine with 'em, but am keeping that spool around "just in case"....

No offense Willy but You NEED A DUAL AXLE CAR TRAILER.
FLAT TOWING IS DANGEROUS. I KNOW IT WAS DONE BACK IN THE DAY....I DID IT TOO IN THE 80'S.
WE ONCE LOST A 1968 DODGE DART GTS 340. @70MPH.
WAS IN THE CORNFIELD UPRIGHT. NO REAL DAMAGE....BUT REALIZED THIS IS STUPID SHIT WAY TO TOW A VEHICLE.

I got lucky (I hope) over at the evil page and found the needed input shaft for my DN/RG street 5 speed. I have all the other parts I need for the rebuild.

And, amazingly, the vendor for this part is Jeg's....
LINK to the for sale page....
They won't ship to Hawaii for some reason, and freight is free in the lower 48, so having it shipped to my son in Oregon, he'll UPS it to me.

This doesn't really solve my problem for me in the long term, but at least I can get it back on the road and enjoy it a little while looking at better alternatives. Just gotta keep that lead foot outta the secondaries and the boost gage !!!
Willy

I Find It Utterly Impossible that You Behave & Keep Your Heavy Right Foot out of the Gas & short shift @ 2 psi Boost Willy.
You have been Showing off now for at at least 50 years & Racing Street & Track.

It's Genetics, inherited my abilities from my Dad....

Just for fun, dug up some info on the TKO trannies:

Tremec%20TKO1.jpg

i'm guessing the 500 ft-lb rating on the 4616 box is due to the 3.27 low gear. I need to check that the box is essentially the same as the other two trannies inside, except for that low ratio in first.

Anybody know for sure?
Aloha,
Willy

The only Feasible ways to test transmissions for ultimate Torque capacity is to Self Destruct Test.
Just like Engineers do Willy.
But $$$$ is tight for all today.
I don't know about you but I can't afford to blow up $2-5k new transmissions.
A BIG GAMBLE........
MY EXPERIENCE DICTATES 2.20:1 -------2.52:1 ST. GEAR.
RECONFIGURE REAR END GEARS AS REQUIRED .

Yeah, I hear ya....
I just got used to the DN 3.28 1st gear and 1:1 5th with a 3.50 rear and 27" tall tires, it was a good combo for driving around here on this island....

yep, lost my foxbody with a homemade flat tow setup when i was fresh out of high school... took the insurance money from the car, bought a dual axle, then scraped up the money for the next project... a third gen camaro

Willy, There is guy I know in Illinois that has a 2.93 1st Gear Jerico 4-speed for sale.
Its from a NASCAR Racer.
Has the Inline shifter to go with it.
He is asking $2500.
Thought I let you know.

He has a Vintage '55 Chevy Gasser Racer too.
Was a L88 BBC Racer in the '60's.
I bought the 1957 Olds 9.3 5.86 :1 geared Rearend from under it.
He is straight up.
Nice Guy.

Jerico is a Real Man's Manual Trans like a Lenco.
Jerico should be good to 800 HP easy.

Decided to go ahead with the Doug Nash rebuild, just don't have the cash to go buy a new TKO600. Will have to lighten up my lead foot a bit....

Found parts I needed on ebay, shown here next to the old parts:

The wear pattern from the dual disk clutch plates is very visible on the old input shaft:

Got everything cleaned up, together, and with new bearings from the local bearing house where needed:

Now to stuff it back in the case, and back in the car for some road testing, gently, gently !!!
Aloha,
Willy

I wish you could put full power down of that 425 Blown Olds Willy.
I know its making you Krazy.
You Love Fast & Showing off.
I understand $ is tight.

I am trying to change how things have been done in the Corvette world too.
5-6 K Rpm launches wanted by me.
Front wheels in the sky & can't see the Blacktop Racetrack.

My friend says he has the Jerico 4-speed still.
Sent me a picture finally last night.
Its Nice.
Said he has it sold but has not been paid.
I will try & post a picture today.
Its on my phone. Text Media message picture he sent.

I know its frustrating as all get out!,
(building a car with an engine that can easily shred the drive train behind it)

(just a bit of history) and yes its a all too common mistake, and one reason I like to post both my successes and screw ups so we can all learn, as we are much more likely to think things thru if we hear about what worked and what did not work on other guys car builds
If you have been reading the threads on the site you might have noticed I HAD ADDED A NITROUS KIT TO MY 383 SMALL BLOCK ,
and even without the nitrous the engine (that was designed and built specifically for nitrous use) makes decent power.

viewtopic.php?f=32&t=430

well the 383 sbc engine alone , that I built mostly because I wanted to have something to drive with a bit of performance while I worked on building my big block engine I intended to swap into the car, at a later date, even, without the nitrous easily trashed the stock original 700r4 trans in short order, I got good at replacing U-joints and even replaced the half shafts. the original 700r4 was replaced with a upgraded 700r4 from an 87 corvette, while the original 700r4 trans was rebuilt with much stronger internal components as a spare.
Then I found a 4L80E and purchased that to be used for the intended big block swap as it was obvious that the 700r4 trans design was never going to hold up to the power levels a properly built big block could easily produce which would easily double the torque levels the 383 N/A produced.
I eventually resigned myself to just not putting slicks on the car or drag racing as the launches were just too hard on the existing drive train and a huge bottomless money pit! all of which too what very limited cash I have occasionally that is originally intended for the big block swap just to keep the small block running
(btw)WE ALL MAKE STUPID MOVES
I have come too see building the small block as a stop gap measure as a huge financial mistake, I should have spent that money on the true main goal of installing the big block upgrade, but at the time I had a great many of the small block components handy, the cost like most projects looked like it would be far lower than it eventually was, and it seemed logical, yet thinking back it turned out to be a bottomless money pit that slowed the big block swap to a near stop, and I regret that decision.
If I had spent the cash I spent on that 383 build and the re-builds of both 700r4 transmissions plus the half shafts and u-joints on the intended dana 60 4 link rear upgrade and 4l80e full manual control upgrades along with the big block engine I still may not have completed the process but i would surely have progressed further toward the goal than I have currently, on the up-side I learned a great deal , helping several friends build their big block powered c4 engine swap corvettes , and learned about how too build,a better big block swap watching the successes and mistakes made on those cars, being rebuild and learned more about how too repair u-joints , acquired a shop hydraulic press, and gained some learned knowledge points on tweaking MPFI small blocks, and acquired a good many more tools, and a new shop, with a lift and several welders, etc. so I guess its not a total loss

Your Dana 60 I still Have Grumpy.
I will be Damned to Hell if anyone gets it but You.
Don't say No.
Hurt a younger Man's feelings.
Mine.

I do appreciate you FINDING AND holding it ,and when I get some cash I can part with Ill darn sure jump on the chance to acquire that differential if its still available, but currently supporting my home and my son, HIS MEDICAL BILLS, and his kids EXPENSES are draining me of every spare dime, its a huge p.i.t.a.
iF YOU WERE LOCAL I COULD SWAP YOU A 454 ENGINE CORE OR A RIFLE, OR COME TO SOME OTHER ARRANGEMENT, but shipping costs or other factors make long distance a problem
